Four boats made it out for great sailing conditions this past weekend for MBYC's short courses.  One of my regular crew members, Sean, and his son borrowed Pat's boat, Gary Lee was out with his son, I was out and Kris Shand made an appearance.  Sean had some boat issues and so Gary and I wound up doing most of the racing.  The RC had us start with other fleets and switched things up to keep them interesting.

Congrats to Gary for retaining his title as King of the Bay this weekend.  We enjoyed 10-12 of breeze with Mission Bay's typical shifts and puffs to keep things interesting.

In the first race, we started with the Lido class.  Both Gary and I were a little late to the start but quickly got out front for clear breeze.  Gary rounded just ahead of us and we wound up passing him on the run, only to have a bad tack on the final beat to let him sneak into first.  By bad tack, I mean crew not un-cleating the jib and getting stuck to leeward and rounding up and having an opportunity to inspect the blades without having to wonder if the water is causing any visual distortion.  I think we were also able to rinse the leeward spreader but I could not tell because I was hiding behind the hull with one foot on the centerboard.

In the next race, we started with the Soling fleet, which I think had 5 boats on the line.  In about 10 knots, they create an enormous wind shadow and point high, so getting into clear air and finding a lane was tough.  I had a poor start and I think Gary was able to break free quicker ... then going on to an easy win.  There was one interesting moment where Gary tacked on the starboard lay line under three solings and allowed us to gain big.  We did prove that 505s are faster than Solings, finishing ahead of them all.

In race three, we started with the lightning class ... Gary lead from the beginning, although it was relatively close when we finished.

In race four, I don't recall which fleet we started with, but we had close racing and traded places on the final beat based on shifts and puffs ... once again following Gary across the line.

This was a great event to knock the cobwebs off and we had a great day out on the water and then enjoyed hanging out on the back deck.

Next event we'll sail is the TNT on May 7th.  May 14th is questionable for me since I will be headed to the PCCs in Santa Barbara, testing out my new Glaser Kite.

For those of you reading this that are interested in 505 sailing, there are several boats at the club for sale for very reasonable prices.  reach out if you are interested in getting out.
