My hiking pants (typical Laser-style, over shoulder straps, 3/4 length, did not survive the Worlds at SFYC.  I know not all drivers wear hiking pants, but I like them for hiking in breeze. I usually just wear neoprene shorts on light air days.

I checked Sailing Anarchy and saw a recommendation for Sandiline hiking pants.  I also see Vaikobi is introducing hiking pants.

My own experience is that anything that does not have shoulder straps slides down and has to be pulled up several times a race.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Ali

I believe that hiking makes the boat go faster, so I always wear hiking pants.

I have tried so many different types of hiking pants, including the newer Zhik/rooster ones with movable/separate pads. I have found that the more traditional ones where the battens are permanently attached to the neoprene work better for me. I absolutely agree that the shoulder straps are a necessity for preventing them from having to be pulled up mid race.

I have a pair of the Gill full length hikers (https://www.gillmarine.com/race-equilibrium-hiker/?sku=RS35DBL&gclid=Cj0KCQjwmvSoBhDOARIsAK6aV7iyWQoqF71EfVZqaFJY-lhW1Slz-IwaCHKWQEcyd8Xb40CmblVpe1gaAvruEALw_wcB) that I used every day in SF and they were plenty warm with a thin heater top and spray top.

I find that wearing these Rooster shorts over the hikers is beneficial as they take the wear and tear and are a fraction of the cost to replace: https://roosterusa.com/collections/mens-ranges-racearmour/products/106750

All,

I have been using SEA  (Sail Equipment Australia) hiking pants. These have a number of nice features:

  • adjustable shoulder straps (though these do slide of my shoulders occasionally)
  • over the knee length (3/4), with reinforced wear material over the knee
  • fabric reinforcement over the neoprene on the back
  • heavily reinforced stiffened areas on the back of the thigh
  • Reinforced seams

The neoprene in these is thick enough that it provides nearly all the warmth of a wetsuit and I rarely feel the need to also wear a wetsuit with them.

Never-the-less I wore through the back of these hiking pants in the seat (as was tactfully pointed out to me by Aaron and Rob during the Worlds), probably from the sliding in and out on the seat tank and rail. Everything else on these hiking pants is fine and but for the large hole in the seat, these could be useful for rather longer.

I suppose I could wear something over these to reduce wear, but that might slightly reduce my mobility and might be too slippery on the seat tanks.

I have seen some replies with recommendations.  Has anyone tried the Sandiline hiking pants?  These are recommended on a Sailing Anarchy thread.
