The Dave Cahn Sportsmanship Award is given each year to the member of
the American Section that best demonstrated the Dave Cahn brand of
sportsmanship. Dave was the perfect gentlemen on and off the water. He
raced
as hard as he could, but was always within the letter and spirit of
the rules. Tragically, Dave died while racing his 505.

After reviewing the nominations received from class members the
National Exective Committee has voted to present the 2009 award to
Dave Birchfiel.

Dave has singlehandedly sparked strong interest in the 5o5 in the
Cary, North Carolina region at Lake Jordon. He has offered numerous
rides to anyone willing to go get wet. He is one of the best guys to
have a laugh with at a regatta with his easy going Boston-born banter
and is a true gentleman. He has trained several crews, some of which
have moved on to owning their own boat. He has also designed and built
5o5 dolly/trailers to help with the shortage in North America. His
enthusiasm for the class is second to none. We are all lucky to have
Dave on the water with us and congratulate him as the recipient of the
Dave Cahn Sportsmanship Award for 2009.
