Per-Eric,
As you can imagine, there have been lots of conversations about this topic here in Annapolis. We also looked back on past World Championships and can see while generally it has alternated between Europe and the rest of the World, this is not always the case, as recently as ’05 and ’06 they were both in Europe and in the ‘70’s there was a sequence of 3 out of 4 outside Europe. Ironically enough Sweden and Bermuda were back to back!
At this point, being pragmatic and taking into account the general impression around the dinghy park people seemed motivated for Freemantle, Bermuda, Sweden in that order and San Francisco are proposing the year after. From an organizational point of view having the calendar set up well in advance will help promote all of those events.
Would this work for you?
Thanks,
Mike

Subject: Important concerning the Worlds
2020
Hi,
Though I have not received much feedback from you (for natural reasons - I know you are all sailing J), I hope that it has become clear that Sören from Denmark (DEN 9079) will present the Swedish proposal for the Worlds 2020 in Båstad at the AGM.
We just want to make clear that the 505-sailors in Sweden, and many other European 505-sailors as well, consider it important for the development of the class in Europe, that we follow the long lasting principle, to sail the Worlds in Europe every second year and outside Europe every second year. According to this the Worlds 2020 should be sailed in Europe. If the AGM sticks to this principle, the Bermuda proposal just has to wait until 2021.
Since France can’t make it 2020 and since we don’t know of any other prepared proposal for the Worlds 2020 in Europe, we would very much like the AGM to decide already this year that the Worlds 2020 is to be sailed in Sweden, Båstad. Just like Freemantle 2019 was decided last year in Weymouth.
Decision three years ahead means that the national 505 association and the local arranging organizations gets a long enough time for seeking sponsors and for preparing for the Worlds in the very best way. It also means that the nearby 505-fleets can use the Worlds as part of the marketing of the class in a good way during a longer period.
We are hoping for your understanding and support.
Best wishes,
Per-Eric
Mike,
Good to know how the discussion is in the dinghy park, just don’t forget it is dominated quite heavily by US sailors J - unfortunately we are too few overseas that have come to Annapolis. To us it seems there must be more strategic thoughts from the board of the class, than just mirroring what the majority of the US sailors, participating in Annapolis, thinks
First, the fact that the 505 class has been inconsistent previously is not a good argument for being so again. The “every second year Europe” is a principle that means we can plan in a good way all over the 505 world and that we know when the possibilities are to come up. Let’s be brave enough to be consistent.
Second, it is important to have the over-all best for the class in mind. The class have more active boats in Europe then in the US and in Australia and in South Africa. We also have more active 505-countries here in Europe and to continue to keep many countries active (with reasonably large fleets) and motivated, it is important for the brand of the class. We want to be a true international class, not just a class for a few countries. The large number of participants at least every second year (we have had 125+ the European years) is very beneficial for the class and helps marketing it, world-wide. If we agree on that, we think it speaks in favor of keeping strictly to the established “every second year Europe” principle. We understand that the US, Australian and South African sailors find it hard to travel to Europe every second year, but the compromise has been working reasonably well a number of years (with the exceptions you mention). The worlds in Europe should in turn preferably be balanced between locations, north - south as well as east-west. This speaks in favor of France (or something in the south) 2020, but since that is not an alternative, I am sure a majority of the European 505-sailors are more prone to go to Sweden for a worlds 2020 than to go to Bermuda.
Third, three out of six Worlds 2017-2022 in the US or close to the US seems a bit too much bias. Two outside Europe event back to back will not make European 505 sailors happy. The number of European participants will likely be low in Bermuda, the year after Freemantle. That is not a good sign for potential 505-sailors, not only in Europe.
The proposal from Sweden is quite simple. In 2019 it is Freemantle - 2020 let’s decide Sweden now (growing fleet that is still not at a level where we have been and want to be - the decision will help us gaining even more interest and performance) - 2021 (to be decided next year) proposal of Bermuda or somewhere else outside Europe (What are the real arguments for Bermuda? We don´t understand fully, but it must be some very good arguments for the benefit of the class), 2022- somewhere in the south of Europe (France, come on! - to be decided 2019) - 2023 San Francisco (to be decided 2020).
Best wishes,
For the board of the Swedish 505 AssociationPer-Eric Thörnström, Ebbe Rosén, Tom Hastenpflug, Lars Bjerke, Sven Flood, Tomas Franzen, Lars Hultgren, Magnus Nilsson, Toni Hastenpflug, Galen Mack
