If writing Nonfiction, try a little fiction: find an inflection point in the path of something you know well, and write what would have happened if they had made a different choice. If Yahoo had bought Google, if Apple had decided not to make a phone... or if you had made a different choice with your life. 

Fiction writers, paint a picture of an alternative future: Hitler lost early or won. Two americas after the civil war (or three!) Or other historical inflection points.
