Using a custom application on 6.8.3. Been running great for several
years on NT server. Moved app to Server 2000 after a company
merger ... still works great. Upgraded to Server 2003 a couple of
weeks ago. The clients find the server but when it tries to create
the client files under Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\4D
it give the error above and won't create the files.

It is not the length of the database name. It is not the DEP
settings. I've tried those. Any client machine not running Server
2003, the client resources are created and it accesses the 4D server
just fine.

I'm out of options. Any suggestions?

not specifically for windows - but
I run into the same problem on OSX from time to time -
the solution is read/write privs to the application support/4D
directory

you need to make sure that the directory to which 4D is trying to
write its application support files (.res and.rex files) - not sure
where on windows server 2003 this will be - has write permission
(probbably simplest to give everyone write access) once you find out
where this is.

Since there IS a permission issue - maybe 4D is trying to create the
application support directory somewhere windows doesnt like - like All
Users, or maybe in the windows directory

Make sure you don't have a 4D folder directly inside the C:\Windows directory.  I think 4D Client will find that first and attempt to use that location.  Then the permissions problems will kick in.  You could move it to the Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\4D location, or just delete it and let it get created automatically.
