I would therefore be very interested in learning more about existing
set ups which have made use of excel spreadsheets for this purpose.
Looking on google I came, among other things, accross references to
something called e-dashboard but the links I found seem to be no longer
working.
If you have access to a Windows PC, you may want to look at MyLife
Organized, because MLO's database files can be exported to excel XML
format. MLO has a couple variations of GTD templates integrated into
the trial version.
First tab - Next actions
Second tab - Projects
Third tab - Waiting for
Fourth tab - Someday / Maybe
Make the first column in each sheet really wide, and then just list one
thing per row. Voila G.T.D from F.R.E.E. (esp if you use a freeware
spreadsheet).

You are right : Steve tells he moved it to his blog, but his blog is
empty (but provider adds). As he doesn't say anything against
distribution, here is my 2002 copy of E-DashboardR2 (pdf manual
included) :
