SCHOOL NEWS

News from West Hills

Dear West Hills Families,

I hope this email finds you well. This week was a busy week indeed. One hundred and thirteen eighth graders along with staff and parent chaperones set off for Washington D.C. Based on my Twitter feed, it appears they are having an outstanding adventure experiencing our nation's capitol! I look forward to hearing their stories when they return late this evening.

Our fifth grade students and teachers were working at a fevered pitch this week as they prepare for next Wednesday's PYP Exhibition. Students have been digging deeply into their topics, working closely with their mentors, and are excited to share their learning with our community on Wednesday evening, May 3, 2017. Special thanks goes out to all our mentors, teachers, and our PYP Coordinator Mrs. Geden. It truly is a whole community effort to ensure Exhibition is a success!

It is error only, and not truth, that shrinks from inquiry. - Thomas Paine

Earth Week Book Exchange

All week during their lunch period, students were encouraged to bring in gently-used books that they no longer needed at home. On April 21, those students were able to select new-to-them books to bring home. Any books not claimed by the final lunch period will be donated to communities in need. Many thanks to our parent volunteers Karyn Bylinowski, Jill Mann, Nicole Pollack, Michelle Kessler and Rana Roumayah for helping manage this event!

Classroom Activities to Celebrate Earth Day

On Friday, April 21, students at each grade level participated in a variety of Earth Day-related activities. Fourth graders learned about native plants, backyard habitats, and the relationship between plants and pollinators. A big thank you goes out to Betsy Keidan for teaching students about these topics in our school's butterfly garden! Fifth graders learned about climate change, with the help of eighth-grade volunteers Noah Charness, Noah Eaton, Riley Crimmins, Steven Elias, Savitri Anantharaman, and Ariana Riegel. Thank you to Mr. Birkholz for supporting them with this activity! Sixth-grade students investigated the importance of watersheds with the help of Mr. Fadoir from the Oakland County Water Commission. Seventh graders enjoyed a presentation on biodiversity from the Organization for Bat Conservation. Big thanks to our PTO for sponsoring this presentation! Finally, eighth graders investigated their ecological footprint. These activities could not have been a success without the help of parent volunteers Terri Kraft, Kim Kruger, Stacy Zousmer, Ashley Broad, Sarah Sherman, Paulina Hakopian, Pamela Borenstein, Kathleen Hoover, Nicole Pollack, Natasha Kendal, Mary Riccardi, and Sarah Cheng.

Math Placement Information

As a building, we completed the course selection process in March, and now that the last quarter of the 2016-17 school year is well under way, we are starting to think about math placement for next year. Regarding math placement, we know most children are appropriately placed within their grade level; however, some students have demonstrated potential for success through grade-up math acceleration. Soon (likely next week), we will send more information about the math acceleration process, test administration, and final placement notification.

MStep Testing

M-Step testing successfully kicked off this past week. Please take note of the testing windows for your child below. Block teachers will post their specific testing times on their My Bloomfield or Google Classroom pages. Teachers have access to practice sessions provided by the State, and have been encouraged to allow students to see samples of the assessments.

We kindly request that out of school appointments not be scheduled during the school day, if possible, while M-Step is going on. Students who are absent during a testing session are pulled from class for make ups. With this in mind, if you need to make an appointment for your child, testing will be complete by 1:00 p.m. each day.

Thank you in advance for all your efforts to make M-Step testing a positive experience. Best practice informs us that several factors influence test outcomes:

  • Arriving at school well rested and after having a healthy breakfast.
  • Approaching the test with a positive attitude.
  • Taking your time, doing your best, and asking for clarification, when needed.

M-Step Testing Windows:

April 10 – May 5: 5th & 8th grades ELA, Math and Social Studies

May 1 – May 26: 4th, 6th & 7th grades ELA and Math (7th Grade also takes Science)MStep Test Windows
