CENSORSHIP
the Brecht Forum, NYC
November 8 – December 6, 2007
Curatorial Description:
The unimagined evolution and status of many
politicized cultures continues to inspire multimedia
artists throughout the world. While Americans
struggle against subtle forms of censorship to
maintain the right to openly create and communicate,
many artists are dangerously criticized and even
exiled from their countries of origin. In an era of
tight controls on civil liberties -both domestically
and internationally - art that comments on this
reality may easily become radicalized.
The CENSORSHIP show brings together the work of local
and international artists who choose to create art
which rejects the systems presently dominating
humanity and its ways of thinking. Created through
strong ideological or cultural beliefs, all works
submitted should portray the nature of conflict or
reflect the artist's desire for greater awareness in
these delicate times. Whether already censored by the
powers that be, or highly at risk to be censored in
the future, all works submitted should effectively
relate to the artist's unique personalized statement.
All mediums of work will be considered for this
exhibition. This is not only an opportunity for visual
artists, but writers, poets, dancers, musicians...
