Hi Folks,

I'm excited to announce that the newest version of Google Earth, Google Earth 7 (beta) is now available to download!

As you all know, this desktop release is the follow-up release to Google Earth 7 Mobile which contained Tour Guide and 3D Imagery cities.

What I'm very excited to tell you about, is the ability to also have legacy 3D Buildings layer displayed in cities that have 3D Imagery. Yes, this means that BOTH layers will be available so you can still submit and view 3D Building models that you've created! How cool is that?!

Here's how it works; when you turn on the 3D Buildings layer and fly to a city such as Portland Oregon, you'll see the 3D Imagery buildings by default. If you want to switch to the user-created/legacy 3D Buildings, you go to Tools menu > Options... > 3D View tab and deselect the "Use 3D Imagery" checkbox. This will turn off the 3D Imagery buildings, and instead use the legacy 3D buildings.

We listened to what you said, and came up with a solution on the desktop version of Google Earth so that you can continue to create and view your 3D Building models! :)

Cheers,

     - CraigD and the Google Earth Engineers

This is great news, thank you, it probably means one less worry to many.

The issue I raised in this thread just a momant ago seems to be present in the desktop version as well: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/forum?place=topic%2F3dwh%2FXMJeSy4kBik%2Fdiscussion
I hope you could look into it.

Will this feature be available in the plug-in and something we can default the plug-in to -- to view Legacy 3D buildings?

It seems to be "sort of" available using the plugin already. Turning off terrain and 3D buildings on shows the old buildings, turning buildings off and terrain on shows the regular terrain DEM. Both terrain and buildings on shows the new autogen buildings where available.
This seems kind of awkward since the terrain is essential for geomodeling. I hope google will fix this in an API update.

Is it possible to put the option to select new or traditional 3D Buildings under Layers instead of Options please? Millions of people are already familiar with that. Make it so when one is ticked the other one is un-ticked.

There is something strange going on with navigation. I went to Portland Oregon. As the new buildings were loading I rotated and navigate around then suddenly I was out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Also the view often jumps to a slightly different zoom level when trying to drag it.

Very impressed with the ability to zoom right in close. Much better than what had been implied with the original presentation.

Having installed it I see now that the "new" 3D buildings are selectable via Layers. So is it possible to have a 4th sub-option under layers please, namely Legacy buildings. (Or replace Grey buildings with that option. Why are they still there?)

Hey, you guys are brilliant! I was about to ask that legacy buildings continue to display as default until the new 3D stuff gets implemented for a city (eg. Sydney) and I see that you have already implemented that. Thank you.

Hi Peter, I'm afraid we'll have to just be happy with at least having the option to view the legacy 3D Buildings. I'm looking into the view being bounced out of current zoom level.

The gray buildings serve a purpose for visualization of actual structures present on the map, even though they may not be pretty. The are also used in some cases, in Maps and Maps Mobile.

I guess a better explanation for having the Gray buildings in a layer is that the Photorealistic layer is a shared layer between the legacy models and the new 3D Imagery. So when you turn on the entire "3D Buildings" layer, we want to have the gray buildings in place for all legacy cities, and have them disappear in the 3D Imagery cities.

Hope that makes sense.

Unbelievably cool. Google did listen to the community. And I am pretty
confident this decision will pay off for all at least for the years to
come.
Thanks!

One thing I will never understand is Google's decision to make a *GE
beta version the default* download* and to make the stable version
available only after unchecking two (seemingly unrelated) Google
Chrome checkboxes. Usually Google doesn't even *make beta releases
public*, and here it is not obvious how to get the stable version if
you are not already used to this procedure.
Would it be such a problem to have two prominent buttons:
"Download latest version Google Earth 7 (beta)" and
"Download stable version Google Earth 6.2" ?

P.S. Are there any other changes in GE 7 apart from the tour guide and
3D imagery. Just curious...

Anyway, thanks for notifying us, Craig.

Yay!  Now I can take screenshots of these awesome massive Kryptonian-like crystals growing by my brother's place on Baker Beach, San Francisco, CA (In this case, GE is better than reality).

Craig, a Layer on the main screen sidebar for Lovingly user-crafted models would be so wonderful.  I think a lot of people would want to toggle back and forth.  I like many things about the Auto-modeled cities, it's nice to have on the desktop version.  The Tree-pillars are a little weird, though.

I'm surprised that our User-generated models are called "Legacy".  This isn't Tron (although computers are trying to oust the Users in this scenario, sooo...??)  Google Earth has said that SketchUp models will still be relied upon in many no-fly areas or remote areas, so why are we legacy?  So Craig, be our proverbial Dumont, tell GoogleEarth that you believe in the Users, and please help us insert User-models into the main Layers =).  Pretty please.  I think Google should let the User-crafted GE and computer-crafted GE grow side by side and see which one ends up better and more popular.

And in the Earth option on Maps.google.com, it would also be great to give people a choice, maybe a pop-down button under the pop-over Earth button, showing the options.  Then Google could derive user statistics, and could see for which option people spend more time or learn about Google-advertisers' locations.

Also, I'd love to see the new Auto-modeling tech used in canyons.  It's really ideal for the Grand Canyon.  Twin Falls in Idaho would look really cool with it, too.  Or like Half Dome, Yosemite Park.  Ooooh, or Arches National Park in Utah!!  I was just there in Utah last week, and Google Earth makes Delicate Arch look like an indelicate lump.  But the new auto-modeling technique could actually make the holes in the arches, and could texture the sides.

Well... tested the new version. Really liked the tours on the bottom of the screen.

But the auto-generated models... really this is some kind of a joke right? Even building maker models are generally better.
Look at this (it is Rome):

Since when do tree count as hills/buildings? Since when is a road made up of triangles.
Really, this useless for any practical usage. And of course, you can no longer click for more information.
Why have this on as a default option?

Now, being constructive, a logical option would be to disable the new 3d layer when you zoom past a certain point. If the "legacy" buildings became visible when zoomed, you could click them and see them in detail. The problems with consistency would go way.

But I really can't understand how such a nonsense thing is released. Google has such a high standard with maps that this is bizarre. GoogleMaps GL with gray buildings is better than this...

Hi Kat, thanks for the thoughtful feedback, as always. :)

We're looking into options to how we display/toggle the "legacy" buildings on/off in cities that have 3D Imagery. I'm lobbying for a toggle under the Photorealistic Layer. The key is, when a user clicks on 3D Buildings, it picks up which ever setting is toggled ON. I do think that's a better location than up in the Tools > Options... > 3D View, so we'll see.

Regarding the word "Legacy" for describing the collection of user generated SketchUp models and Building Maker models (user generated and Google generated) and Contributed models (and any/all combination of these in a given location), we can look at different names but you can see these aren't just "lovingly user-crafted models" we're describing. We look at things like "Historical Imagery" elsewhere in GE for naming convention. We can look at alternate naming, although it's a very low priority (given the work we have to do to grow the new technology) and it was a very big change to not having any of these models available in 3D Imagery cities. So I'm hoping folks can appreciate this decision to continue to display these. Remember the other option...was none. :)

We're working on improvements to the new 3D Imagery technique as our main focus and should see improvements and rapid advancements.

Cheers,

Hi Craig

my system is a pc with windows7 x64, opengl mode with Quadro FX1700
graphics card

when I returned to google earyh 6.2 everything is back to normal.

Google earth install the plugin on version 7, and also appear strange
shadows on GeoWeb applications from a browser.

I also had to uninstall version 7 plugin to fix my problem in google
maps

Google Earth 7 does not uninstall the plugin.
must be done manually from the control panel.

Another question:

the new 3D imagery for me is great, is very quick to move or rotate
the view

in the distance a large city looks better ..

is interesting to have the two systems 3d,
my priority, now is display the classic models correctly

If this works well in version 7, and you have another fan ¡¡

Best

I agree with Pmolsen's suggested solution.

I am very happy to hear Google did decide to hear our concerns and suggestions re: SU Models layer.
But I have to agree with Pmolsen's suggestion/solution so we don't have to un-check one and keep checking the other option every time we use the program.

Thank you Craig

an observation
i think that in the new versión 7 exist two lights or suns in the
east and west.
the union of two lights make the hardest contrasts.

if you activate the sunlight icon in google earth, and run time.
we see that there is only one light. this is correct
my buildings are perfect, no shadows.

with the plugin happend the same..

you need delete a one sun in new Ge7 for normal view..

i hope to help ¡

We're looking into options to how we display/toggle the "legacy" buildings on/off in cities that have 3D Imagery. I'm lobbying for a toggle under the Photorealistic Layer. The key is, when a user clicks on 3D Buildings, it picks up which ever setting is toggled ON. I do think that's a better location than up in the Tools > Options... > 3D View, so we'll see.

....

We're working on improvements to the new 3D Imagery technique as our main focus and should see improvements and rapid advancements.

My suggestion is to select the layers by zoom level, and simply to limit to new 3D to what it does well: distant ensemble views.
After a certain Zoom level (city block level), switch to the "legacy" models.
This is what already happens with the street-view images, you kind of zoom into them.
Having many options to toggle tend to will confuse users. It's best to have the software select what's best for each situation by default.

Just some more comments about usability problems with the new version:
» The new 3D "buildings" are not interactive. The user can't click/select anything...
» The camera goes inside the new 3D buildings, there's no collision, at least on most cases
» Street names and lines become invisible, like they are bellow the terrain or something.

I sincerely hope that the new technology does provide some usable results, in the near future.

Hi Ricardo, those are all good ideas/observations. There is a lot to consider for the future of how the 3D Buildings work with regards to clickability, interior spaces, collision detection, better photo and geometry details, options for transitioning to Street View and how that works together in a default mode.

I appreciate the insights and feedback! Please let me know if you run into specific problems that I can report.

Cheers,

I'd count bad/no collision detection as a specific problem. In Avignon, France I notice that the camera is using the old terrain as reference. In fact I can move below the new 3d terrain and see the old one a few meters lower....

Also, the camera changes relative position if you toggle between the old / new 3D layer. The viewing angle should remain the same I think.

Other than that, nothing to report, it runs well.
Thank you for taking our suggestions into consideration.

Please excuse some more direct/frontal criticism that I have made recently. My strong opinions are only the reflex of considering that Google Earth, specially the API, is one of today's most important software. It's unique.

I use the API to provide some clients with in-browser 3d viewer of heritage buildings.
I understand that this is not what most people use it for, but trust me that it is a relevant usage for local authorities, for example. So my negative feedback comes with that bias. I'm used to people complaining about unaccurate terrain or small texturing details on models.
So I expect that all data, auto generate or user provided, to have a reasonable degree of accuracy.

I see your reasoning behind this, and yet I would very much dislike
such behaviour. If Google earth automatically switched between the two
3D layers then ...
- modellers would have a hard time taking screenshots of (or looking
at) their hand-crafted buildings from a larger distance
- Tours would look very unpleasant if suddenly the buildings changed
shape and color and density during such a tour or a tour video and
- GE would suddenly have to load a second layer once you cross the
border between "close-up" and "overview" mode. You'd likely have to
wait a minute or two for the second model to download until you can
continue your navigation in a serious manner. As it is currently you
zoom in to a city and Google can gradually load better textures and
more details - it doesn't have to download another model in the split
of a second.
- it would simply irritate the average user.

And besides, it is imho better to let the user decide what he/she
wants to see. Its the same as with the Streetview layer in GE which I
have simply switched off.

Mattias, I understand your view. What you describe was what we had before the current update.  Of course that having only one layer is better. But now we already have two.
We have a new terrain+buildings+trees continous mesh. In reality it is only the terrain layer with more detail. You can see this if you try the MonsterMilkTruck API demo.
That is why you can't select anything there.

You think about modelers and screenshots... Do you realize that as it is those models are gone in several cities? The average user will not change the default settings and the API will not show them.
The best you can do is to load your model in a KMZ and try to put it over the new 3d buildings... Or have only the terrain and your model.
The days of complete user generated towns visible by default are gone.

Unless you find some way to merge both datasets. I'm not saying that my solution is the best. There's a precedent with the "seamless Earth" feature that addresses the diferences between satelite images at diferent scales.

Hi Craig and all.

Since I had to set up a new computer I too the chance of installing GE
7.0.1.8244 (beta) for the first time.

I have to report the following:
1. When I first started GE 7 the network connection was down. The
result were not only the usual boxes notifying my of this problem, but
another dialog telling me GE had crashed. Indeed it was immediately
closed. This was reproducable

2. Several texts in the German version are lacking a translation, such
as f.e. "Server sign out" and the terrain-related options in the
options dialog. (They were fine in GE 6!)

3. The reported "shadow issue" is also visible on my buildings. For
example on a curved city wall, the southern and eastern faces are
normally bright, while the south-east oriented faces between are
considerably darker. Also some roofs appear unusually dark.

4. Apart from the described crash above I did not note any stability
problems, but I haven't tested the SU's model preview function yet,
which caused earlier versions of GE to occasionally crash when
importing the KMZ model.

5. I checked the 3D imagery in Munich and San Francisco first. My
findings:
- Due to the used imagery the houses are *way too bright*. In many
quarters almost all house faces appear plain white with just the
windows being recognizable. This applies to many portions of aerial
imagery and is due to the fact that such imagery is often not
primarily taken with priority of making good-looking 3D models, but is
often a compromise of the demands of many different stakeholders, some
of which require lighter imagery to recognize tree species or avoid
pitch black shadows.
- One inherent problem is that in contrast to hand-made 3D models the
buildings already have "sun" and "shadow" sides, the former being too
bright, the latter often being too dark to recognize any detail. This
also renders the GE shadow simulation feature rather useless.

(My tip: Do your photo flights on an lightly overcast day or ideally a
day with cirrostratus clouds slightly covering the sun: In my
experience you get less aggressive lighting conditions and the
resulting images are *much better* usable for 3D imagery.)

- Some roofs with dormers look rather strange in Munich.

- The Munich city hall is floating ~5m above the terrain!

- There are several houses whose textures looks shifted up or
sideways relative to the geometry. This becomes visible f.e. on the
tower of the San Francisco Embarcaredo ferry terminal (seen from east)
but also on the southern facade of the building block north of the
Munich city hall. Had I submitted such a 3D model it would likely have
been rejected.
- 3D buildings are not clickable
- I dislike these tree columns
- Due to the lack of resolution it is not possible any more to find a
certain store or building in a city by reading their signs on the
facades.

The "legacy 3D buildings" in Munich, although created from oblique
imagery as well, did not have similar problems, and their city hall is
not floating. Their colours are much more natural and pleasing.

All in all I am not particularly fond of what I see (unless from 500m
distance) and will certainly switch back to GE 6.2. My main points of
criticism are that the new 3D layer is way too bright and way too
coarse to be useful for anything serious, at least in Munich. The way
it is I wouldn't even consider if for flyover videos of Munich.

As I said before: I find it inapprehensible to make this GE 7 beta the
default download. It is really only in beta status imho.

Good feedback Matthias, thanks for sharing. We're looking at everybody's feedback to help direction for future development.

As is the case with many technologies, the only way to truly drive forward is when there still is much work to do. We're taking the development of this 3D Imagery capture, and display seriously. The imagery is captured with 3D in mind from the beginning, but the same settings don't always apply universally to all conditions, and we are learning. :)

Thanks again for the great feedback.

Hi Erwin,
this is a totally different issue (unrelated to GE 7 or the new 3D
imagery) and it is not entirely Google's fault.
You should know that the imagery you see in Germany is for large parts
created by the German surveying offices and then licensed to Google.
(I've been in contact with them so I know this.) The Bavarian
surveying office makes scheduled flights every three years for
example. Of course I can understand that Google doesn't licence the
newest data immediately for several reasons. So add another year or
two on top of that and you will understand why the imagery is usually
a few years old, except for some major cities or so where Google maybe
uses own data or other data sources.

I should also note that more frequent imagery updates, lets say every
year or so, would make it impossible for modellers with many models
(like me) to have their models up-to-date, that is, re-positioned on
the ever-shifting imagery, vertical faces adjusted to match new images
etc.
So we have a compromise here.

If you find areas that are *really* old, lets say 10 years or older,
and have changed significantly you might also try and report them
here:
http://support.google.com/earth/bin/request.py?problem=billing&contact_type=data&extra=&&hl=en
But ~5 year old imagery must still be considered "normal".

Hi Craig,
I wasn't paying much attention to the updates to Google Earth and missed the whole 3D buildings change.  I was wondering if there would be an easier way to enable/disable the user created layer (Legacy) instead of going all the way to the options menu.  Also, the new layer looks very sloppy and distorted, while many of the user created buildings look absolutely spectacular. One last note, please keep the online plugin version of Google Earth with only the legacy buildings shown because the GE-flight simulator at http://www.gefs-online.com/ needs good solid terrain for the best game play.  Thanks for taking the time to read my note! :)

"I was wondering if there would be an easier way to enable/disable the user created layer (Legacy) instead of going all the way to the options menu."

This is the only way to do it.

"Also, the new layer looks very sloppy and distorted, while many of the user created buildings look absolutely spectacular"

Noted. We've received that feedback from others and we're working on it.

"One last note, please keep the online plugin version of Google Earth with only the legacy buildings shown because the GE-flight simulator at http://www.gefs-online.com/ needs good solid terrain for the best game play."

I don't have control over that, but we're developing the new technology further, and not focusing the other way, so I would expect changes to occur with 3D Imagery improvements before expecting more effort to go into the legacy buildings.

Thanks for you input, I appreciate it.

Jon, I think it's actually quite a shame how Google is point blank insulting all the thousands of people who dedicated countless hours creating the 3D Buildings layer with this ugly garbage looking auto-generated 3D buildings layer. The original 3D Buildings layer should be the default, and the auto-generated garbage one should be the option buried in the Options menu. It's ugly as sin close up, and it takes far longer to load, not to mention randomly crashes GE7 in Win7Pro64.

I just have a question, which version of GEarth should we use when creating 3d models, as the terrain elevation is not the same in version 6.2 and 7?
One of my models was rejected twice already as it was found floating, but in version 7 me and several other users saw that my model is not floating.

If someone could kindly answer this question soon, as people are creating models, waiting for updates just to find them rejected due to terrain problems.
