Is there an official place to make recommended enhancements to Google Earth please?

One annoying "feature" that I would like to see fixed is the incorrect tilt direction employed in Google Earth when pushing the mouse up/down with the mouse wheel depressed. It operates in the reverse direction to Sketchup and the reverse direction to commonsense.

eg. zoom in and view the side of a building in Google Earth. Hold the mouse wheel down and move the mouse left. The front of the building moves left - as though you are dragging the view.

Now hold the mouse wheel down and move the mouse up. Logic dictates that the front of the building should move up, as it does in Sketchup, but no, it moves in the reverse direction.

An option is needed to allow that mouse action to be reversed.

Hi pmolsen

it certainly would be nice if the user could assign explicit axes/
directions and/or mouse buttons to SketchUp and Google Earth. For
example, as soon as I install the Logitech mouse driver I can assign
actions for all buttons, but none of them mirrors the desired
behaviour of the wheel/center button which I get only when no explicit
Logitech mouse driver is loaded.

I got so used to this that I never notice any more.
But you are correct: The tilt direction is reversed between GE and
SketchUp, with no obvious practical reason imho. Probably has
historical reasons, but since both applications are nowadays
distributed by Google, there should be options to achieve a consistent
navigation behaviour.

You CAN change the mouse tilt direction. Here is how....

  1. Open the the System Preferences by clicking "Window > Preferences."
  2. On the left, click "Compatibility"
  3. Under "Mouse Wheel Style," check or uncheck the box.
  4. Click "OK"
That should do it.

I forgot to mention.

You can make similar adjustments to the mouse movements in Google Earth. Here's how...
  1. Opent the Google Earth Options dialog by clicking "Tools > Options..."
  2. Click on the "Navigation" tab
  3. Under "Mouse Wheel" check or uncheck the box for "Invert mouser wheel zoom direction"
  4. Click "OK"
Note:  You can also adjust the zoom and tilt settings in the lower right of this tab.

That should do it. (too)

This reverses the zoom direction when turning the mouse wheel and this
was not the question discussed above. We were talking about pressing
the mouse wheel and then moving the mouse forward vs. backward to
increase/decrease tilt angle.

Checking the "Mouse Wheel Style" button makes things more awkward
imho.

Then, don't check it.

Correct. The Tilt direction is the problem, not the zoom direction.

There needs to be an additional check box or boxes for the mouse wheel initiated tilt. Maybe one new box to reverse the forward-backwards tilt (the one that is wrong with respect to Sketchup) and a second extra box to reverse the sideways tilt (if anyone thinks it needs to be changed.)
