I've posted this in the Sketchup 8 group as well, thought I might find an answer here.

I'm trying to replicate the exact view and position of a view from Google Earth Pro into Sketchup Pro 8.
When I try to import a .kmz file it shows the red progress bar then the message 'import failed'.

Is there some way to do this?

I'm not exactly sure what you're attempting, or what .kmz you are trying to import. Can you add more details?

Have you tried grabbing the terrain and imagery from Google Earth directly within SketchUp?

Hi thanks for response.

I have views setup in Google Earth as placemarks with positioning, eye height etc. set.
I am able to import terrain, imagery and buildings from Google Earth to Sketchup, but would like to have the placemark imported so I can match the view details in Sketchup exactly.

I've tried to save the placemark ('Save place as') to a .kmz, though when I try to import it into Sketchup it fails.

Should this work to import the placemark?

Thanks

You can't do what you're trying to do by importing a .kmz. It would be great, but the .kmz camera angle is based on Google Earth's Lat/Long information and camera angle, which doesn't translate in SketchUp.

What you can do, is to create a "Scene" with the same camera angle, but you'd have to line it up manually, and then save the "Scene". You can then make numerous Scenes and have the SketchUp file play through the Scenes similar to a Tour in Google Earth. You control/edit the Scenes using the Scene Manager in SketchUp.

You may have to alter the camera's Field Of View in SketchUp to more closely represent what you see in Google Earth.

Does this make sense?

Here's how you create a Scene: View menu > Animation > Create a Scene.

Craig,

Could some sort of "bridge" between camera views in Sketchup and Google Earth to give you exact placement be programmed through Ruby and added on as a plugin?
