I've seen that Google are adding 3D trees to places like Athens and San Francisco, which is great.
I was wondering if they allow users to add trees themselves? I'm currently modelling my village, and it looks pretty dull without at least some hedges. I've heard that models get rejected because of foliage.

I would try to upload the models including the hedges. I have seen
several examples which have been accepted. So, not in every case they
refuse them.
But try to make or use simple tree models and use them as components.
Give it a try.

Thanks. I suppose there's no harm in trying.

I don't think that Google will object to you including trees in your model as long as they are geo-referenced, visually similar and are to scale. If you learn to use transparent textures using Photoshop or Gimp, then you could make models of trees that grow in your local village. I had the same concern too but correct me if I'm wrong, I believe that the Google trees are appearing only in internationally known cities at this stage.

Last I heard, there were only a couple of cities with Google trees total.  In my area, there are now entire models that are nothing but trees, for city parks and such.  Including trees is fine, just don't go over the 10mb limit on model size.

I strongly recommend creating separate models for trees (or groups of
trees) and buildings. Including trees in models of buildings might
earn you a rejection. The simply do not belong together (usually).
Also by having them separate it is easier to replace the trees or the
houses separately.
