I hear the maximum size cap on a model to be accepted to Google Earth
is 10MB. Is this the limit for the actual skp file, or the size of
the kmz? These two can differ greatly. Please help.

Hello

I think it applies to both types (I've seen kmz file sizes up to just
10mb)

I recall encountering the kmz upload limit of 10mb when uploading the
first uncompleted version of my blackpool tower model & had to reduce
skp file size so both file types could be uploaded for later
editing.....

Well, what if my .skp is 11 MB and the .kmz is 9 MB, can I just upload
the kmz then and it will be ok?

Both the SKP and the KMZ are limited to 10MB on upload to the 3DWH. A
file that's smaller than 10MB may still fail a complexity check to get
into Google Earth, however (particularly as regards complex
geometry). If it's not geometry, but texture images, you might
consider reducing the resolution on some of the images to save space.
In any event you can always try uploading it as a KMZ, and see what
happens to it from there. It'll let you know if it's too complex for
us to use.

Hi Allison,

Thanks for the detailed response. Can you specifically state how many
faces/edges a model can have before it fails a 'complexity check'.

This one I'm working on is a doozy, currently at 3889 edges and 1482
faces, and I expect this to increase by about 50%.

Unfortunately, I can't give you a specific face count or poly count
limit; all I can really say is "it depends". If your model is in an
urban center with a whole lot of other models, and your model is
fairly complex, it'll cause problems; the same model way out in the
countryside with nothing else near it might be just fine. Go ahead
and submit it to check.

Can featured modelers get some kind of credit in this sort of
situation? : P
