Hello - Built a few models and after reading some horror stories regarding the approval process for Textures and Incomplete structures, thought before wasting my time I'd ask the oracle that is this forum.

I would like to build the main Causeway of my town which can be seen here http://goo.gl/hIIm

What I don't want to do is try and build all these and then get rejected due to incomplete texture and buildings, which I have no control over.

The problem being that the rear of every building is private and I cant get to see what the back looks like for accurate building or textures.  I can get the building foot print from Google Earth and roofing shape from Streetview, but the rear and some sides would be impossible.

I'm sure I read somewhere that inaccessible fascia's can be textured grey? All the other textures would come from my own photo's and streetview.

My main aim of this little project is to give visitors an idea of what the street looks and feels like, the buildings date from the 1600's to present day.

Comments and advise appreciated!

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

Some walls could be textured gray, however, it would be better to "fake" the texture of those areas by taking an actual photo-texture and editing it. I've attached some images as examples.

Think of it as using a "generic photo-texture" (similar to a SketchUp material).

There are approaches I use:
ask the owners if you can photograph the places you can't see normally - without people in the shots
use telepoto lens - you can get quite good shots and better angles when using a telelphoto from a distance
pay for a helo flight and go up with someone else - one can take photos and one can take video. This is expensive tho, but you can do a whole city pretty well this way. With this option you need to give instructions to the pilot to position shots for the main buildings - like get to points that are rouglly perpendicular to faces and they can supply harness so you can lean out safely.
look for aerial shots, even speak to ppl in flying clubs

Simply using architecture from other surrounding buildings that look the same, and have clearer views is a much easier way, don't you think?

.I think I'd be going with Jaxcoffee's method myself.

Even if he wanted to spend a whole bunch 'O money flyin' around (as would we all), it doesn't look like the kind of place you find "close to airports" !!!!   I could be wrong (I haven't looked in GE . .yet), but I doubt it.

Wow ... I'm an idiot.
Turns out there's an airport within a couple miles ....go figure.
Guess I should have zoomed out on GE a but sooner !!!

A couple more notes:
I put ask the owners (or residents) first because that is the best option for many reasons, the most important being respect for privacy.
We have had some success with flying a kite with a camera programmed to take snaps periodically. but this is fraught with issues and dangers in built up areas.

Thanks everybody for your replies. Much as I would love to hire a light aircraft or Helicopter, it's well out my budget! The two airstrips located a few miles away are disused US Military and RAF bases, one is now an inland port full of shipping containers and stored cars. The other is a heliport for the local emergency helicopters.

The telephoto idea would be ok, but if you look at the Aerial shots, all the buildings back onto large gardens, which themselves back onto houses etc, there are no back roads.

I think I will go with Nicole and Jaxcoffee's suggestions, seem the most logical.

Thanks again

Steve.
