Size DOES matter

Hi, I am trying to build a MIDI controller, and I am basically making a box with a lid with various squares and slots cut out. However, I need to know EXACTLY the size it will be because it needs to fit very pre defined objects that will fit in the holes. What is the best way to do this? How can I print my shape on a 2D printer so I can verify that it is the right size?

Also, when I export to i.materialize, it defines the shape as 27 x 21 x 3 mm no matter what units I have in my 3dtin project.

Also, what is the best material if I want to drill small holes?
