I have to be honest towards this question. I never consider entering the field of business until college. My parents are both teachers and they wish me to be a teacher for long. I’m a very artistic girl since I was young. Dancing, painting and writing novels has always been my favorite hobby. I love creating new things with my flying imagination and unprecedented curiosity.
Just with another bit of curiosity, I participate in the Hult prize last semester, which is a business contest that ask the participants to build a social enterprise to solve the early childhood education problem in urban slum. The winner of the competition will receive 1 million dollar as the start-up capital. Without any related knowledge in business, I start to brainstorm the solution with my three of my friends from China. Of course I didn’t expect I would be selected by the school. How can a group of FRESHMAN who knows little about business change the world? Yet I still enjoy the process of brainstorming and organizing new ideas to from a business plan. Amazingly, I found myself can’t stop as I think about those serious social issues and the potential ways to improve it. For me, it was just like art-creation. What’s different is that I’m using my creative thinking skills towards an aim that can provide the whole good to society.
Fortunately still, our team was selected to represent our college to participate in the regional round of the competition.It is such a wonderful experience when you realize that everyone can really make a difference if they have ideas, no matter how young they are. The trust of judges immediately inspired me and make me realize that I need much more professional knowledge to support my business plan.
Therefore, I believe that the 3DS experience would be a wonderful preparation for me before the regional competition. I would be more than willing to share my creative thinking and art-related skills to the team along with my terrific passion for improving the education in developing countries.

This year the Hult Prize contest focuses on the inadequacy and unguaranteed opportunity of early childhood education (children aged 0-6). Currently most problems on the parent side centered on the high cost and low awareness of the education. Since all of our team members are Chinese, we would like to focus our targeted area in second or third-tier city in China. The targeted population is separated as the kids of parents who migrant to bigger city to work and the kids of parents still in the rural places. The solution towards first half is mostly lower the cost and the solution towards the second is to generate creative idea of awareness campaign and to improve the quality of the existing education facilities.
According to a recent phone interview with the hope elementary school headmaster, human resources of the professional preschool teacher are still a great problem. Government funding can only support the equipment part of the problem. Therefore, our team aim to provide a free training program for the local community so that parents who are unemployed at home can be trained and become the professional teachers. This way it not only improve the quality of education but also generates some employment for the local community.
In terms of revenue model, we would like to open some souvenir shop in the first-tier cities. Location will be choose carefully and certain partnership with museums and other places of interested should be established. This way we can utilize the relatively better economic condition of population in other city as well as the great population mobility from tourism to help generate substantial amount of revenue in covering the running cost.
Besides the revenue from the souvenir shop and traditional way of generating profit such as donation, we would like to include the strength of students already in school(from middle school to college) to contribute in the fund-raising process for the company. Some national-wide campaign would be held with a united theme. Yet each school still has its own flexibility in how to carry out the campaign. Each campaign will be placed in a two-month period and 70% of the money raised with be directly donate to the company.
The system with central government control most of the policy certain provide certain challenge in obtaining the tedious legal document before starting the main service. However, we want to utilize the positive influence of government towards our project as much as possible. In terms of the targeted area, we hope certain policy or subsidy can be made towards the family who send their kids to school. The policy should aim towards the utmost need of the society chosen. (Health, Particular agricultural product,depending on the physical and cultural aspect of the society.) In terms of the relatively richer area, a concept of social credit should be invented. Since Chinese students have relatively lower emphasize on the amount of volunteer work they do, we would like the whole society to raise awareness of the value of volunteer work.
A numerical measurement should be invented and certain credit gained should aim to provide students some benefits in terms of career finding or tax deduction.
Our company will aim to provide volunteer opportunities in terms of short-term trip and summer program so as to connect the students with the kids. (preferably the preschool kids to elementary school kids.)The trips can last from days to months. This provides the “helpers” the experience of teaching in a less economically developed region as well as raises their awareness of those social issues. These volunteering experience will very meaningful throughout their life time.
