Hey there,

these templates were released earlier and updated to Max 2012. Are
there versions for older Max Versions still available ? We still have
quite some older Versions running. Or should they compile against
older SDKs too despite the new stuff (like deferred loading etc)

Regards,
Thorsten

Hi Thorsten,

Unfortunately we don't have versions of the templates available for
older versions of 3ds Max. The current source won't work out of the
box for older versions of 3ds Max, but I don't think a lot of change
are needed. If you think that there is significant value to these
templates, then we can investigate updating them so that they work
with older versions of 3ds Max, possibly via conditional compilation.
What do you think? Is it worth the effort? What is the oldest version
of 3ds Max would you like to see us support?

Thanks,
Christopher

Hi Christopher,

for me personally it would be very helpful, but i got no idea if it is
worth the hassle on a "bigger scale"
as most things i have to support exist already naturally hehe. I was
rather wondering if they were maybe
lying around anyways.

I currently have to support 2008, 2009 and 2011 (i know, i know :P)

Thorsten

In general, not that much changes between versions of Max (WRT the
basic headers anyway, which is what we are dealing with here).

It should be possible to make this happen, without too much effort.
It wasn't much effort to upgrade them to 2012 anyway.

Ideally, we would want a project config for each version of Max
supported. Also, I think it would be pretty beneficial to agree on a
environment variable to specify the path to the SDK and exe folder -
3ds Max 2011 introduced an environment variable, but I think we had to
rename it in 2012 to support VS 2010 (the original started with a 3 -
which wasn't read in VS 2010). If we back-ported these, I think
keeping the variable named similar to 2012 would be the most use, as
this is unlikely to change in future.
