Anyone remember that dualstrusion raster image technique from a few years ago?

I can't find any trace of it online, but I remember watching a demo video a few years ago of somebody (I think Photoshop?) with an experimental dualstrusion feature that would print a raster/halftone image on the surface of a 3d print by doing little loops of black or white filament at the perimeter. The ratio of exposed black and white created a halftone raster grayscale type graphic using only a standard dualstrusion FFF printer. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Pretty sure I didn't dream it up myself... I remember a printed soda can with a pretty detailed grayscale logo on it.

I posted that after an interview I did for the podcast with reps from Photoshop. At the time I had no access to a Rep2X so I never tried it. was able to try slicing from Photoshop to my Rep2 and it worked quite well. Back then the only supported dual extruder machines I recall were the Rep 1 and the 2X. Did they follow up on it? No idea. OTOH it'll only cost you $10 to try it since you can run Photoshop for $10 a month now.

I was honestly trying to get a machine together to do this. Was going to put 18t pulleys on a Replicator Dual.

I just never got that far.

It is still part of Photoshop.

It looked so cool, I'm surprised I couldn't find a single photo or video online. Do you know any links?

Yes, that is weird. I am having a hard time finding images too.

Here is an official Adobe announcement:

It was quite a splash at the time, wonder why all the media disappeared?

Maybe they realized the R2x was EOL, dunno.

It only worked on dual machines they could slice to. The only 1 I recall was the 2x. Also think it was a solution to a problem with very few actual use cases. However, like a lot of things had a number of users jumped on it and put impressive samples out there, it could have caught on... still can. If PS sliced to the Raise3D or even my FFC I'd give it a try.

Here are two papers describing the process in detail.
https://cg.ivd.kit.edu/publications/2014/DCM/DualColorMixing.pdf (50MB)

And a related paper solving the problem of printing horizontal color gradients with FDM.
Quite interesting... they print sublayers in primary colors for each layer.

Zmorph's slicer software 'Voxelizer' uses a similiar technique of interweaving different colors.
