Hey folks,

OK - am hoping that someone in the group might be able to point me in
the right direction - although, I am Quite sure very few of you have
Insurance on your 3D Printers. However, I figured i would give it a shot...

I will try to make this as brief as possible.

I recently moved - and when I did so - I had to move my Mojo printer.
When I originally Leased the printer - StrataSys required insurance on
it. And, at the time - I got Ins. for the machine. Problem is - when I
moved to my new place - I am On the Water - on the opening of a Channel
on the South Shore of Long Island - my current Ins. co. said that they
would NOT insure the Mojo if I move it there. As such, I moved it to a
buddy of mine's place. Problem with that - he's Far from me - 45 min. by
car one way - 1/4 tank gas for round trip - and, he has me paying him
from my client's print projects - since he helps run the projects, takes
pieces out and puts them in the Bath - and is burning Electricity.

But - it is NOT Optimal to have it out there. So - I want to move it to
my place - but, so far - I can NOT find an insurance Broker who will
also cover my printer. It gets WORSE! One woman I spoke to - she never
heard of 3D Printers. I told her about my Mojo - and about my client
projects. Then she understood it. But, once she started checking around
- she actually spoke to one insurance guy who KNEW about 3D Printers -
but, worse yet - Knew about the Liberator Gun - and because of it -
claims he would NOT insure my printer!

I Tell you - Coby really Screwed us 3D Printer people with his Damned
Gun Controversy!!!!

OK - so that's the problem - I can't get insurance right now. Can anyone
point me to a Broker who maybe COULD Sell me an insurance policy???

TIA,
Kurt

Maybe StrataSys might know - or are you off lease now?

Man, that sucks.
I'm with USAA and believe it or not, they cover everything under my renters insurance.
The first turbine golfcart was crushed when my roomate at the time forgot about the clutch and drove a jeep through the closed garage door, up the tongue of the trailer and smashed the orignal engine. The renters insurance then covered it and replaced the engine with one from no less than world record speed holder Art Arfons!!!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_Arfons

You should have seen the look on the adjuster's face taking pictures.

Oh - no way baby - I'm still on the Lease - as I only had Mojo since
like Feb. and its 5 Years!

Thanks for the suggestion. I may actually do that - contact StrataSys
and see what they say - although I may have to bend the truth a little...

Thanks again Doctor - much appreciated!

If it were a biz it would fit under your biz insurance... but it sounds like you want to keep the machine at your living location. Residences and industrial biz reqs differ.

Well - I did make it up - but, it IS True - since I have been producing print jobs for this client of mine - given to me by a Great Guy on this Forum - and those jobs have been keeping me busy over the past few months!

I'm confused.  Isn't the Mojo less than $10k?  Why would you lease that vs buying it outright and saving yourself the added cost?

I could never convince my lady to let me blow ten grand on a machine, no matter WHAT it did. But $190/month (without specifying the length of lease)? Possibly.

Chris - in fact - the Lease was MORE than 10K - since that original Lease did NOT really include any materials (Plastic, Build Plates, Soluble Support Removal Tablets) - I included a batch of materials into the Lease. So - Mathew was EXACTLY Right - a Monthly costs that Must lower is Much "Easier to Swallow"!

Without really trying the same is happening to me... although I do not have an industrial strength printer... not yet anyways...
I've printed about 6 things for a fee and have actually started to sell items I designed and printed. Not alot of $, but enough to pay for PLA.
If I was to make a go of turning it all into a real biz I would not only get tthe bigger machine, I'd also get a couple of the other technologies as well. SLS and gypsum powder.

Hey Doc - I contacted StrataSys per your suggestion - which was a GOOD Suggestion - and, guess what? Here was thier response:
"Sorry we can not help with that. We do not have any insurance contacts to work with. You may contact the reseller you worked with to see if they could provide you with a contact in your area. Other option would to be pay off the lease and refinance it with a loan..."

Kurt,

Just what is it that StrataSys (or whomever) wants to see? A rider to
your insurance stating explicitly that a Mojo printer is covered against X, Y, and Z
for mucho dinero? Or what?

I ask as I know in my parts it can be hard (if not impossible) to get insurance if
you tell the insurer you are running a manufacturing business out of your home.
That because most municipalities around these parts do not permit that. Heck,
getting a business license with your domicile as your address of operation can even
be pretty hard in some cities around here.

Anyway I ask as maybe whomever just wants to see that you have X dollars of
coverages of some flavor for your business equipment. And then you just need
to tell the insurers that you work from home, have your work computers,
fax machine, leased printer, boxed parrots, licensed software, etc. They shouldn't
bash an eyelash at a leased printer: plenty of people do that in association
with their business, even home businesses.

It's more then likely due to the difference in both building codes and zoning for industrial/manufacturing. Buildings used for this purpose are built different then residential and office. Also, when zoned accordingly, these buildings are grouped in their own areas separate from residential. All by design. Bottomline, the system will allow a residential based business as long as it does not include manufacturing.

I'm kinda curious as to what this could mean for home based 3d printing for hobbyists. It could mean that when the home insurance company learns you have a 3D printer either your rates go up or the policy is cancelled. For that matter the same applies to a home workshop with lathe, saws, drill press etc...
