I already have 52 unique hits on this article, there's a (bit of) a scoop in it (DARPA's Cyber genome project) which has been underreported in the news in my opinion.

Up to 118 unique hits. 98 entry, 56 exits so nearly half the people reading the article is interested enough to keep reading.
Did any of you share/post/bookmark this anywhere?

Interesting, I stumbled it too and on the site I see '31 views'. Yet when going into Google Analytics I see there were two referrals from stumbleupon. awstats doesn't list stumbleupon at all. Do you understand why?

Do you have a social media tracker? Like AddThis has Analytics integrated. It's free too. Get Clicky's another cool tool but only 1 month trial and rest you have to pay for. See which one works out for you best.
I'm also very interested in results because my company is planning to be a reseller for Get Clicky. I'd definitely help with research on getting more book marks etc. If you want I can send you some stuff on Digg.

What exactly is a social media tracker Yu? I have the Gigya Socialize plugin on the site, this morning I was looking for how to enable something and to my surprise the plugin keeps track of a bunch of things (well not really a surprise as it does do some off-site tracking) that you might find interesting.

Phil! James! Daniele! Wake up fellas, or are you shy all of the sudden, sjeez :p

Basically it's a plugin, program, or analytics that track social media stuff like how many diggs you got, how many delicious, thumbs up for SU etc. Most social media plugins track this now but most of them are not tested, and on google analytics it's still very new so no one really knows what's the best tool or how accurate they are. It's all an open field for now.

I used to have another 'share' button on the site which only showed Twitter/Facebook share buttons. Only when people would click those buttons would you see how many times the article had been shared. It used a trick by adding an identifier to the link which would update a counter on the plugin maintainer's site to indicate how many times an article had been shared. It would not be able to keep track of how many times people simply cut and paste a link from the article to their share site though. I decided to abandon it altogether as it looked kind of pathetic to have a button on every page saying '1 share' (and everybody knew who did it :)

OTOH, I also observed an article I saw being tweeted from mashable the other day. Unreal, 7 minutes after the article had been published there were like a 100 tweets already. That's just automated tweets and there's nothing 'social' about that. I personally don't fancy such guerilla tactics to make your articles look more interesting, do you?

However it would still be nice if people were to share articles more often as it is, to me at least, a partial indication of how informative articles are, 'how am I doing?'.

Well, based on the awstats figures, today was the new #2 'busiest' day this month on the site. 'Gorilla in the Room' went to #9 on the most viewed list rather quickly with, at this moment, 175 unique IP's, 97 entries, 46 exits. Despite the much more visible and more accessible comment section there were still no comments on the article.

I think what's missing still is some sort of a 'read more' section on the end of the article. Particularly when readers find the article interesting they will read to the end of the article. I'm not sure if, after reading to the end, they'll decide to scroll up again to see if they can find an other articles. Still, 46 exits out of 175 visits is not all that bad I believe.
