Hello,

As we now have gathered a few individuals on this mailing list, I'd like
to start out by giving a self-introduction, and asking other members to
do the same. My name is Norman Lin and I am a Technology Group Manager
at 3Di, Inc. (http://3di.jp). I am also involved with the open source
OpenSim virtual world platform as a core developer
(http://opensimulator.org).

As you know, 3Di will soon be making its in-browser virtual world viewer
technology available as the project 3Di Viewer "Rei", released under an
open source BSD license. I think this open source technology has the
potential to drive the adoption of virtual worlds by bringing them into
the browser with open source technology. 3Di as a company, and I
personally, welcome collaboration of all kinds that can help accelerate
the adoption of virtual worlds and the 3D Internet.

At the 3Di home page listed above, you can get an idea of what sorts of
commercial products and services 3Di offers. In addition to commercial
activities, 3Di is also involved in a number of open source efforts
related to OpenSim.

That's it from me - who will do the next self-introduction?

-Norman

Hello,

My name is Jeremiah Spence and I am both the President of the Virtual
Worlds Research Consortium (http://vwrc.org) and the Editor-in-Chief of
the Journal of Virtual Worlds Research (http://jvwresearch.org).

The OpenSim platform is at the center of VWRC's plan for development for
the next five years.

We look forward to working with the OpenSim developer community to build
the next generation of virtual world tools.

Cheers,
Jeremiah

Hi,

My name is Johan Berntsson and I work with R&D and technical support
at 3Di. I have a background as a CS major and academic researcher, but
I also have a long industrial experience of simulation and
visualization. Like Norman, I'm a core developer at OpenSim, and I
have been involved in performance tuning, load balancing, data mining
and scientific computing applications.

I'm interested in the use of virtual worlds in scientific and
engineering applications, and have worked with Intel and universities
in the USA to enable OpenSim to connect to external data sources for
more advanced in-world visualization and simulation. Creating our own
viewer under an acceptable license makes it possible to expand this
work further by adding HUD-like capabilities in the viewer for data
presentation and manipulation, in parallel with the VR scene. I'm
hoping that other will find these opportunities exciting, and feel
free to contact me (johanNOSPAMPLEASE3di.jp) in case you have ideas or
suggestions.

Cheers,
Johan

Hi,

Welcome to 3Di Viewer "Rei".

My name is Zoltan Dezso, but I usually go by my nickname, Zaki. I am a Senior Engineer at 3Di Inc. (http://3di.jp/en/) working both on our server product, based on OpenSim and, every since its conception, as a lead on 3Di Viewer "Rei". I am also a developer on the open source voipforvw project.

I am really glad that we can bring "Rei" to the community under an open and permissive BSD license. At 3Di, we are committed to helping virtual worlds see an increased rate of adoption in the next couple of years and believe that an open source viewer is a keystone in that process. That process, however, depends largely on the developer community as well, so I'm looking forward to working together on what will hopefully become the next generation of virtual worlds and the 3D Internet.

Hello,

My name is Dan Olivares, but I usually go by the nickname Teravus.
I'm an OpenSimulator core developer ( https://www.ohloh.net/p/opensimulator/contributors/20413979569613
) as well as one of the founders of the IdealistViewer project
( https://www.ohloh.net/p/idealistviewer/contributors/1485659252469197
). I also update and maintain IrrlichtNETCP for IdealistViewer.

I'm excited by some of the amazing things that 3Di is doing and look
forward to extending what exists, experimenting with new ideas, and
making immersive virtual worlds (and virtual world based applications)
more accessible to the average person and developer.

Cheers

My first company is NEC as Packet Switching software developer and
joined for
US based companies after I left NEC.
When I joined for Netscape, my employee # was 9 and I could see
internet explosion
and Netscape's end of day..
Since then I was mainly with Network appliance companies such as Bay
Networks(Nortel),
F5 Networks and Cisco Systems.
My technical background is software development first and for a long
time, I was in charge of
Professional Services / 3rd level Technical support.

Being with 3Di, I have almost same feeling when I was with Netscape.
At that time Netscape was very passionate company to expand Internet
and now,
3Di is very passionate company to expand 3D internet.

I am really looking forward to working together through this
community.

Hello,

My name is CAO Junwen, a Chinese, but I usually go by the nickname
Caocao and sometimes Simsim.

Now I am working at 3Di Inc. (http://3di.jp/en/) and focusing on both
3Di Enterprise Products from original prototype and OpenSimulator
server side more than 2 years ago.

I think that 3D internet should be opened as a new page in the future
with the open of 3Di Viewer "Rei" as a BSD license if we can continue
working together on both viewer side and server side with both Opensim
community and other communities focusing on the virtual world, where
there are many talented developers, testers and advisers who are
committing and sharing so many great and wonderful ideas and things.

I am looking forward to working together with you and receiving your
exciting requirement or your talented idea and commit in the future.

Best regards,
-Cao

Hello Rich,

Welcome! From what I've seen on your blog, the Universal Virtual World
WebHUD sounds very interesting indeed and I look forward to hearing more
about this project, and how the 3Di viewer "Rei" may be able to work
into your plans.

Best regards,
-Norman

My name is Ryan McDougall, and I am the lead architect for realXtend
(http://wiki.realxtend.org/index.php/Main_Page), working on our own
viewer called Naali (http://dev.realxtend.org/gf/project/viewer/)

realXtend goal is the same as 3Di's in releasing this viewer, so I
would like to work with the open source community around Rei as much
as possible to make sure the best technology ends up in users' hands.
As everyone knows, this platform development work is expensive, so it
makes the most sense to share as much as possible.

As most of you know, I am a former employee of 3Di, one of the first
developers, and pushed hard for the creation of an open sourced 3Di
viewer; so for me it's quite a joy to see it finally realized. :)

Congratulations 3Di!

Cheers,

Greets everyone I am Peter Finn AKA Nink. Originally connected IBM
to Opensim project back in Feb 2007 (has it been that long). Very
excited to see the release of this client and would love it if we had
a level of collaboration between the other viewers.

I am interested in the planned direction for REI. Is there a roadmap
for the viewer and are there plans to work with vanilla opensim /
Modrex or is the current direction only to support 3Di Proprietary
opensim enterprise server with your server side modification to
irrlicht meshes. Also are there plan to release the server side code
that performs this processing as it appears in the current form the
engine is not usable without this component.
