1) I just got a brand new Gateway 450mhz with a Voodoo2 3dfx card.
2) I attempted to play a few games, but got this error:
_GlideInitEnvironment: glide2x.dll expected Voodoo, none detected
3) Gateway is stumped and is sending me a brand new Voodoo card to replace
my present one - if that doesn't work, I'll have to send the entire computer
back & get a new one.
...I'm presently waiting for the new card, but in the meantime I thought
some of you 3dfx experts might be able to put your finger on what my problem
is.
I've already tried reinstalling all the drivers, physically moving the card
to a different slot, etc. The device says the 3dfx card is up & running &
working, but the games just keep giving the same error over & over.
Interestingly, if I go to Desktop Properties, there should be a tab for the
accelerator there - but I don't have one.
I'll be happy to answer any questions if I've sparked your curiousity!

Might be worth a try.

So, give this a try:
Remove card from device manager.
1. <right click> My Computer
2. Select properties, device manager
3. locate your voodoo card (mine is CL Voodoo2) listed under Sound, video
and game controllers.
4. highlight and remove.
5. Then re-run DirectX setup (you are using DX6 - aren't you?)
6. Reboot and reinstall drivers as Windoze detects your card.
7. Install latest Voodoo2 drivers. depending what brand of card you have
CL has a program that automatically updates the drivers or you can use the
reference drivers @

#1. Many applications tend to install or have installed copies of the
glide2x.dll locally in the same directory as the
executable. Voodoo2 requires Glide 2.5 or later, so many of these
applications that have other (older) copies of
Glide in the game executable directory will attempt to use the older
version of Glide and fail. One way to check
and see if there are stray Glide DLLs hanging around is to do something
like "c:>dir /s glide*.dll" from a dos
command line and remove all extra glide DLL's. I would suggest doing
this for all disks and partitions in the
system. That way, the application will default to using the new, Glide
2.5 in the Windows directory.
#2. Also, please ensure that you have the latest GLIDE.DLL files installed.
To do this,
search for GLIDE*.DLL on your hard drive and
remove any files found other than
GLIDE2X.DLL from the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
If difficulties exist with only one game, we
recommend trying other programs. You can
try other games, or 3Dfx has demos available at
www.3dfx.com. These demos should
work if the card is set up properly. If other
programs work, the difficulties you are
experiencing are more than likely specific to the
game itself. Some games may require
a patch from the game manufacturer in order to
function properly with Voodoo2
cards.

Gateway is stumped... I have gone through all the levels of their tech
support...
They have replace the cards, I have re-formatted and used STB,3dfx and the
gateway drivers....
I ut a new power supply in, as I had heard some people complaining that their
gateway's were underpowered.
Still nothing... the 3dfx tab does not show up in Dispplay properties... but
the cards are listed under device manager is working fine....
Any help or ideas are appreciated....

I had a voodoo2 and it worked fine... I switched to a cl Banshee (cause I needed the
extra pci slot that it would free up), I now get that voodoo expected error.... Now,
is that because the glide that was installed is for a voodoo 2 card and is looking
for something in the hardware/registry that points to the voodoo and now I have a
banshee? Well, I installed the drivers that came with the card.... I went to CL and
got the new one.... and I even d/led the reference drivers from 3dfx (for banshee)
and still get the same error... Now, I have only tried this with unreal... could it
be that unreal needs to be updated for banshee? I think tonight I will try it with
quake to see if I get the same error... Now, On the CL driver cd, there was a
directory called glide... it had 2 .dll's and a readme... the readme said NOT to
replace the .dll in the window system directory, but to place these in the game
directory... Why? Since I dont have the other card installed anymore, why do I need
those drivers? and it had specific instructions for specific games, but unreal was
not there... had half-life (i think) which is based on the unreal engine right? and
quake and quake 2 and glquake were also listed...
Hmm...
