I'm wondering if someone out there with a Banshee in his/her hands
could let us in on their experiences with it and Quake2. I have a P233,
and am curious what sort of framerates to expect once I rid myself of
this Voodoo Flush. All the comparisons I usually see are somebody with
a PII 450. Thanks in advance.

First, no matter what, a banshee is going to outperform your Rush card.
Depending on your memory (hopefully you have 64MB) you should see 35+ FPS at
640x480.

Although I don't have a banshee card I did have a Pure3D card and now a V2
and can give you the results of those.

My Machine P200MMX OC'ed to 225, 64MB w/ Pure3D and DX6 and WIN95

Demo1 @640x480 = 35FPS

Same machine but OC'ed to 263 w/Voodoo2 12MB

Demo1 @ 800x600 = 50FPS

If I had a Pent2 the result would a bit better. Also my PCI sound card robs
me of about 4-5FPS. All these are with sound ON.

If I got 35FPS with a Voodoo1 Pure3D ay 640x480 on a P225, you should get
more with a Banshee. My guess is going to be about 40FPS. Even though the
Banshee will run at a higher clock speed than even a Voodoo2 it only has 1
TMU (texture processor) so will underperform the Voodoo2 in dual-texturing
capable games such as Quake2 and Unreal. It will beat the Voodoo2 in most
other glide games however. For under $100.00 US you can't go wrongwith a
Banshee card, especially if a Voodoo2 is not in your future.

I just bought the Banshee to replace my velocity 128 card on my Dell PII
D300. I hated the velocity because it wouldn't do the quakes without a
bunch of bullshit downloading and patches and tweaks. I always had to
reboot after using the opengl games because the desktop was left with
garbage graphics after returning to windows. But I can't get the games
to work right with this card either. Quake II will run in a small window
in the center of the desktop and no matter what I do it won't go to a
full screen. glquake will run but only at about 1 frame per 10 secs.
Basically its locked up but I can get out of the game without a reboot
if I wait long enough. Jedi Knight will start up using about 3/4 of the
top left corner of the desktop but when the game level actually starts
the screen goes black and the computer locksup. Needs to be rebooted to
get back to normal. Banshee comes with display properties tab and in
there is a test button for the different functions. When I test the
glide 2.x the screen goes black, sometimes hitting esc will return me
sometimes have to reboot. I kinda thought that the glide drivers were
missing or wrong or whatever so I donloaded the grtvgr.exe and ran it.
Got a message saying there are no drivers for my hardware configuration.
I don't want to take the Banshee back because it sounds quite a bit
better than the Velocity 128 and it is supposed to work with quakes
right out of the box. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Man, that's a butt-load of problems! Have you tried posting these problems
on the 3dfx.banshee newsgroup? It seems unlikely that 3dfx would release a
card that has so many problems with all these popular games.

Ive just installed the banshee but have some problems
1. F1sim wont detect it,have to run in D3D
2. Quake 2 timedemo 1 gives me 17.5fps in OpenGL 800x600
The board says no version of OpenGl is present?
So how does it run?
It runs in 1024 as well? Looks real smooth
3. Ultimate Race voodoo2 version says
did not detect glide2.dll
It still run really well in1024?
What the fuck is going on?
Grand Prix Legends runs in 1024 fine?

Any ideas
I have an AMD K6 300mhz

I think the card is good its just the drivers are messed up
I down loaded newer ones 28/9/98
But these mad Quake2 run in software only?
The drivers were dgp98rc2
These came from 3dfx extreme site
Im confused?

I've got one in my machine as I am typing this right now, got it last
night and still havn't got it to run 3dfx in Quake 2, it will run
default open GL but is too dark to see, never I think Creative shipped
it to the shelves before getting ALL the bugs out. They're tech
support guys can't even figure out why it won't run right. But when it
was running in the too dark default open GL it looked gorgeous and
liquid smooth at 600x800 C-ya.

Looks like heres some good help for you from another post in this news group:

Scott
http://www.proaxis.com/~scott

"I assume you have installed the miniGL driver off the CL Banshee CD and
placed it within the proper Quake directory? I had the exact same message
until I realized the miniGL drivers were on the CD. BTW I'm using a "beta"
miniGL driver for both Quake and Quake II (which I got off one of these
newsgroups). I'm not sure if this is even a Banshee driver or not (because
it says Voodoo2 when starting Quake II) but it works great for me (better
than the miniGL drivers off the CD). You CANNOT Alt-Tab out of your games
though, otherwise your computer will lock up (or so I've been told, never
tried it). As I said, these are beta drivers but if you want good Quake
performance, I'd recommend them. Attached is the BETA miniGL driver.
Replace it with the one in your Quake II directory. For Quake, just rename
it to opengl32.dll and place it in your Quake directory.

Sounds like operator error, both with the Velocity 128 and Banshee. There are
ways to get your setup working, but I suggest that you just format and
reinstall after you backup your data. It's a chore, but your system will end
up running alot better afterwards.

Hi folks:
I am also having problems with the Banshee and am almost ready to go back to
my combo cards, kind of disappointed. But.... some problems are fixed when
you are using Win 98, what a rip though, have to spend 95 bucks to get the
card working. On the good side the card is a dream for what it is, the games
that work, work great, Unreal is just unreal with the card (need the patch
though) my biggest question is: Is there a patch for Quake or GL quake?//
need it bad I Miss my Quake and am going into with drawls, starting to shake
and drool uncontrollably LOL So if anybody can help pl;ease do thanks
Mike

Chad, I dont have a Banshee but I do have a P233MMX with a 12mb CL V2 64mb
ram and I was getting 30fps in Quake2.
But after using 3 Fingers Tweaks I got it up to just under 50fps. It runs
like a dream, so I can delay getting the CPU upgrade a little longer.
I would imagine that you should get frame rates similar.

Hi there
CL Banshee 16 mb
AMD K62-300
64 meg ram

Timedemo 1
demo1.dm2
vsycnc on
640x480 29.4 fps
800x600 29.3 fps
1024x768 28.8 fps (as high as my monitor will go )

This is untweaked installed from the box......the 3dnow drivers do not work
with banshee as yet. The picture quality is excellent (q1 runs at 57 fps at
800x600 ) In 2d the card is about 3 times faster then the Rush it replaced,
in direct X games it flys at 1024x768!
Overall I am VERY happy with it...
Hope this helps
