Is the DIY printer market dead or dying? Anyone here still assembling from a kit? Sourcing and printing parts then assembling? Designing and building your own printer?

I doubt it’s dying, but the ready to print nature of Bambus products and general ease of use has generated such growth that it’s eclipsing the open source market.

I am hoping to start working on a large printer soon. Shooting for 4 ft cube printing area. Any ideas on heating a plate that big? Propane burner lol.
My garage machine shop just needs power. My wife was very "understanding " on what a good deal I got on a Bridgeport, Engine lathe, saw, and drill press. I can't believe we moved it all with a pallet jack and liftgate truck. Don't do this at home, I'm a professional and I shouldn't have done it...lol

I'd dare say that most anyone looking to build from kit is going the Voron or Ratrig route. The available kits, documentation and community support puts then in the forefront.

Four Foot Cube volume. Nice! That was the volume of the 2nd 3D Printer creation that JetGuy brought to NYC World Maker Faire - and that was a rather wild year at the Faire For Sure!!!

Large heatbeds are often made by using several smaller standard ones, like 300x300mm. They can also be staged during heatup if insufficient AC is available. You probably want to use 240V for heating though, then you could have plenty of power. The print sheet spans the individual heated plates. The Prusa XL works this way with 16 smaller plates on a 360x360 print sheet, and the Voron Phoenix which is 600x600 using four 300x300 plates. If you use 16 300x300's that would be close to four feet.

Rolohaun has a series of DIY printers that are popular among home builders. Many folks buy the cheap Creality or similar printers and upgrade the heck out of them, or convert them to Vorons. The RatRigs kits are not open, so not really quite the same as DIY. DIY 3D printing is a separate world from the Bambu space.

I never got to meet JetGuy, though I bought his first book. Did he ever publish his second book?

I will have 220 in my garage when I am done. Putting in a separate panel just for the garage.
That works for the bridgeport mill. The lathe will need a three phase converter to run ( which I have ).

Not at all.  In fact, I have been seeing MORE doing DIY or kit or partial kit builds.  One site I work with just built a mega printer, 1200 x 800 and 550 tall.  It's designed for ABS.  He has 6x 400x400 PEI sheets on the bed and is using Beacon.  A quick look at the Voron Discord shows it's grown by 4,000+ members since my last check.  So no, it's not going away, and it is growing.  New people are coming for easy-to-use tools like Bambu and, wanting to learn more, end up there.

I would say that today the reason to build vs. buy is because you want a printer that no one makes.  You want something different or something that can be modified

David,

I hate to say it - but, you have your Olden Days 3D Gurus mixed up.

JetGuy was indeed one of the original Gurus. But, as for that Book - in which there are a couple pics of my Dragon and Dragon printed parts - that was by Ryan. And, FYI - I don't believe he ever published the 2nd version. I was in touch with Ryan a couple years ago, after he dropped off the forum - and he let me know he got super busy with a move, and having kids - and work on the 2nd book totally went on the back burner - as well as any work at all with 3DP's!

Sad - I know...
