I know peeps here will have their favourite modelling software and I know that Fusion 360 is an incredible tool was a gluttony of features for free personal use.

I have been using pro version of Shapr3d on iPad for around 2-3 years. Recently participated in their parametric modelling challenges and blagged 7th place. Got to choose a free hoodie (if it ever gets delivered from wherever it ships).

They asked me to participate in their community forum as a sort of expert users helping others (which I've already done a bit of out of pure enjoyment for the software).

I've said yes. One its a chance to learn but there is also a route to free licences if one gets to a certain milestone.

Just sharing as it's nice to get a bit of recognition.

Im not sure which is worse - my video skills or my modelling!

ShapR is awesome! especially using an iPad and the pencil.  Trying to use it on a normal windows PC sucks.

I use Plasticity myself. Fusion used to be decent but it's so damned slow anymore.

YO There Lee - do NOT Be SO Hard on yourself!!!

I LIKE Your Accent - it sounds Great in your Video - and I need to watch it and TRY it out! I just started watching it - and I like it!!!

Problem is - RIGHT Now - I am Juggling like 5 different 3DP Projects this weekend. Just printed 2 test fit pieces for Risers for my outdoor chair. As to why - I will have to post pics SOON about that project and explain why.

I was also doing an experimental project this weekend - that I have been WANTING to get to for a While now - essentially 3D Printed "Paper" Airplanes. I did Several prints - but, so far - NOT so Great. But, I have ideas to make it work right - and I WILL Keep folks here posted.

Also - I'm going back to my Sno-Bloks prototype - and now about to print the Handle unit - but, on my U1 - in 2 colors (PETG - some older spools almost empty) and PLA supports!

And - via my Doppelgänger - we are SERIOUSLY Going Down the Rabbit Hole via Python code to Generate my Tree Lamp design - and he did code review - and then reviewed Serious code changes, Serious Algorithm changes and even some DEEP Math - which I Still need to work on Implementing his suggestions.

So - yeah - your Video - I MUST come back to it...

I looked at the pricing and was disappointed that you don't retain all rights to your data intill you step up to the second pay level, so $450 a year minimum to keep your data.

Kurt, I played with those "paper" planes several months ago. Never got the results I was looking for.  Stiffness is so important. Especially with only 1 or 2 layers. Need to try it with cf infused. But they weren't where I wanted to go so moved on without to much experimenting.

I have been using Shapr3D since 2020.

I can tell you this: the listing of  "Company ownership of all data" is read incorrectly.  What this means is 100% about IP property from the group. You are in a TEAM, and the TEAM creator holds all IP rights to the projects created by all team members.

Commercial rights: use of the product for commercial gain is fair use, with the lowest, even free plan.  However, even at half the cost of F360, it's a bargain and much better in many areas, until you run into things that mandate F360 use.

Thanks for the clarification.
Is it more standard cad based, or more artistic based ie blender, plasticity?

David - considering the talk above - I believe it is a True CAD program.

So - just a tad more info about the Categorization of 3D Modeling programs...

Traditionally - a CAD program is a Solid Modeler (and thus the name of one of them - SolidWorks). Versus - the other types of 3D modelers, which you referred to as "artistic" - and generally they are Surface modelers. They can be related to the idea of a ball - one is Solid - like a ShotPut or Cannon Ball - those would be like balls you create with a Solid Modeler. But, a ball like a Basketball or a Whiffle Ball - they are all Hollow on the inside - and one could consider them like a ball made with a Surface modeler. In effect - the Surface modeler - it's essentially like your model (or Ball) is completely hollow - and the model is really represented by a paper thin surface - thus it being a Surface Modeler.

Sadly - I have to admit - really all my 3D modeling experience has been in the Surface Modeling world - mostly using 3D Studio Max (starting with 3D Studio for DOS 1.0 in 1990) - and also using Sculptris. I've only just dabbled a couple times in Fusion360 - and a bit MORE Dabbling in OpenSCAD - whilst that is NOT a traditional CAD program - since that is generating objects essentially via a Scripting (basically a Programming) language.

So - there you have it - a tad bit of info on the world of 3D Modeling Software...

Sorry Kurt, but I don’t agree… In my experience I’ve seen quite a few CAD programs which are actually not 3d solid modelers… including AutoCAD. I recall as a young Engineer at Hughes when I was asked to try out one of the very first solid modeling programs on the DEC mini our dept had. I’m not sure, but I think it was called GeoCAD. I worked with it for years designing consoles and Command and Control facility layouts with large screen displays.

It's OK Andy - you do NOT always have to agree.

However, in this case - you're not only "splitting hairs" - you are also comparing Apples to Oranges!

Think about it...

AutoCAD was started many, MANY Years ago. When I was in college in like 1984 in Philly - at the Community College - some dudes from another college were taking classes at my college - and they had this program. They installed it on a PC in the lab in which I worked - and it was the original AutoCAD.

That original program was Purely 2D. Yes - Years later - 3D was incorporated - but, the guts of it was a 2D CAD program. And, so - you can directly compare it to 3D CAD - since, that is what we are really talking about here!

You can bring up Obscure software that does NOT Seem to hold to the case of Solid Modeling for CAD - but, again - you are speaking Edge Cases - or actually speaking of 2D CAD. Yes - there is a Difference - and, in THIS Discussion - we are talking 3D CAD! - As in - True Solid 3D CAD Modelers - NOT 2D Hyrbid/3D CAD like AutoCAD!

Just sayin'...

Ouch - a Typo...

Shoulda been - " And, so - you can Not directly compare it to 3D CAD..."

I find all this talk of solid modeling and surface modeling funny considering 3D printing defaulted to a simple polygon mesh for slicing.

Your comment is Funny - but, Yes - Spot on. The idea that 3D Printing deals PURELY with Polygonal Only type data files - at least when it comes to files it can read and Slice!

Now - there are lots of folks that claim that you need a TRUE CAD 3D app to produce properly Accurate parts. Like - things that need to fit - and have accurate sizing - to like connect to other things - stuff like that. But, I have done a TON of Accurate type things - using 3DS Max - which is NOT A CAD package. And - thus - this topic of accuracy is one of the reasons folks push True CAD. And, the whole industry of Design - like Mechanical Design - and even things like FEA - that's why True 3D CAD is important. Remember - the original basis of 3D PRinting is about Prototyping. So - printing an initial design - but, then the final parts get produced (generally) - via standard manufacturing methods like Injection Molding - or even Rotational molding!

In the end - yes - 3D Printing itself is about Polygonal Data!!!!

But - as a VERY FUN Aside - you KNOW there is a Special GCode command that can do Circles or Arcs???

Yes - it's TRUE! And - that Contradicts that standard format of files for 3D Printing that require Polygons - such that everything - like EVERYTHING is basically Lines or Line Segments that are printed!!!

In fact - during my time at Essentium - there were several of us - me as one of them - that were looking into whether this Arc type GCode like could RUN on the HSE printers!

I really should find out if the Elegoo Centauri or the SnapMaker1 could run these Arc commands!  If so - I think there is the potential to speed up print jobs if that GCode command was correctly implemented!

Anyway...
