Big thanks to Andy and Whidney for the Aquanet segment of the Podcast months ago.

Clean and effective on both my MK3s and K1max.

I am very grateful to the podcast.

It took weeks to get to Vancouver Island. But so far worth it.

At the risk of getitng banned, chastized, etc I am going out on a limb and saying Aquanet has no place on a 3d printer in any form.

I used to use Aquanet, it is inexpensive, works well, much easier to apply evenly (if you know how to handle spray paint) than glue stick and does an amazing job. However better (Prusa Satin) sheets and occasionally Vision Miner Nano Polymer have replaced it here. Haven't used Aquanet in quite a while. Aquanet does collect dust on the build plate and require periodic washing and re-application. Glue stick is never very even in thickness and I avoid it, the Aquanet was a significant improvement over it, but with Satin and occasional Nano Polymer for hard cases I haven't needed Aquanet for a long time. But at a few dollars a can it is hard to beat the quality and cost effective value until you get to quality build surfaces.

Andy, ban this person. 😉

I've been using Aquanet on all my printers since I first heard about it on the podcast almost 10 years ago and swear by it. I agree that many of today's PEI and other special surfaces don't need it, but I always print on glass and it works great.

I personally use Dimafix on my Bambu engineering plate, which can come in either a can like AquaNet, or liquid pen. I use the liquid pen, very little and only have to reapply every other week at the most printing daily. I just stops gripping under a certain temperature and prints sit on the plate like they do on my G10 garolite plates when it cools off.

Right now I am using some Magoo on my not great fysetc prusa xl build plate (I wont put anything on my official Prusa plates).

This is unusual and I mostly never put anything on a build plate.   The only reason I am doing it now Is I am printing an airtag keychain and I need some fullcontact petg support for the PLA.   Since the bed temp is PLAs its way to low for the PETG so… here we go.

So, here’s a question for you all - Does anyone know how to keep the magoo applicator from gumming up?

As far as aquanet, how much does that Vision miner stuff cost ? Vs aquanet + shipping :-).   Also, what the heck is in the Vision miner stuff?  Just asking since I once bought some stuff for the nozzles to keep petg from sticking and before I applied it I realized it was teflon in liquid and since I print toys for my grandkids I decided, I could wipe the nozzle off instead :-)

Kurt-A

PS: Any discussion of this should mention at some point that poor kid who blew himself up with hairspray and his 3dprinter and possibly other stuff hard to tell what happened, but realizing that the printer is HOT it has possibly exposed through vents electrical connections and most people dont print in an industrial clean room :-) — just be careful out there as they used to say on Hill Street blues.

PPS: Have any of you READ some of the MDS for the fillaments ?  Does anyone  wear respirators and eyeprotection when handling their spools of PLA ?

I never spray into the printer. I spray the build plate away from the machine, and put so little on the build plate that it is very thin.

I don't know what is in the Vision Miner stuff but it works and seems to vanish whereas the Aquanet even when thin makes a sticky layer that attracts dust.

Alan - I will admit - I have on a few occasions - sprayed AQ onto my build plate whilst it was on the printer. Of course, that was just me being lazy. But, I've only done that a few times - mostly cause it's Messy!

Sir - honestly - I NEVER Heard about this kid who blew himself up with AQ in a 3DP!!!

As for Nano price:
VM_Nano.jpg

AS for what is in the VM Nano - that's a Secret - not unlike KFC Original Recipe or the Coke Recipe! They have this guy, who is some serious Chemist type scientist - and they BRAG how smart he is (I met the scientist dude - and he is NOT Friendly). He was the one that developed the stuff. It's Design to Hold when Hot - and then Release when Cool.

Now - like the KFC Recipe - where it's 99% Flour and its the 1% of Spices that makes for the secret part - Nano is Similar - as it's really like 99% IPA - then it's the small percent of the special chemical (although - percentage wise - it's probably Way smaller than 1%. Just sayin'...

I've been spraying the AQ directly on to the plate while still in the printer for over 10 years. Never had a problem with it. Note I don't spray ALOT on, just a couple of short shots. It's never gummed up the works at all. That does not mean I recommend doing it that way, it's just that it's not an explicit rule to not spray into the machine.
If you're not sure what you're doing than... yeah pull the plate and spray it while out of the printer.

Spraying Aquanet into the machine is like spraying glue. If you are good at spraying very little will go where you don't want it, but some probably will. Over time that may build up. It certainly can on the build plate, and it washes off easily with water and a drop of dawn detergent. It should clean up from the printer with a damp rag. But it's pretty easy to remove the build plate and avoid any unwanted overspray.

Propellants in sprays are usually flammable like butane. So there is some fire hazard. If a kid burned up his printer that might be the cause. Also a mist of glue is likely flammable. Most sprays make great flamethrowers when lit. Certainly could be a bad day.

Many folks are not good at spray painting, so might make a mess of things. Depends on your skill level.

The Vision Miner Nano Polymer active ingredient doesn't seem to build up. As mentioned it is probably a very small percentage, so it must be a very effective ingredient. Aquanet could probably be thinned as well, but hard to do. VMNP is pricey but it goes far, and with good build plates isn't needed often.

Interesting Andy - I guess I'm not the ONLY one who has done that!!!

Even though - yeah - I knew in general - it's not a good idea. But, if it's just a little spray - your printer is an Open printer - and a lot of the spray goes Out of the printer - maybe it's not TOO bad...
