As far as linear motors go, we've already had hobby machines with them - the recent Peopoly Magneto X had them. You can even buy the mover itself, for $45 but they don't offer the rail with the magnets. They were (or still are, maybe) going to offer a linear motor kit for machines like Vorons.

At the most basic, a linear motor is really just simply an "unrolled" stepper motor. But they have the advantage of being closed loop compared to the cheap steppers we've been used to being open looped. Which means the print head position is always known, so no lost steps and much better accuracy. Note that Bambu ditched open steppers and now manufactures it's own closed loop PMSM servos for the H2 Series and X2 and P2 series. I half expect them to adapt linear motors in a future lineup.

Also - the "Y" linear motors you mentioned you didn't see are definitely there. The magnets for them are located UNDER the linear rails that the gantry bars ride on. You can see the linear movers hanging on the end of the gantry bars in this video, among others on their youtube page:

Note that this would not be a Core XY - but a Cartesian setup.

Interesting that Bambu is moving to servos. That's a vertical mkt for ya. 
The line of magnets for a linear motor have to be coupled to gantry components and as such proprietary to the specific application. So if you just want to play with a linear motor you'll need to use a generic rail or make your own. Anything on motor drivers?

Bryan - I just listened to the segment today. I really enjoyed the discussion about Linear Motors!!!! I'm glad Andy mentioned Essentium. But, yeah - was surprised he didn't mention Peopoly - which I did Mention in another thread on this forum. 

I NEED to add something about the Linear motors. And, for all the Gear Heads and Serious Engineers - feel free to correct me if I am wrong...

The deal is - based upon my experience at Essentium - there are two factors that make Linear motors Superior:
  • 1. Accuracy of movement - Over other similar methods!
  • 2. Powerful! I believe that the Linear motors are MORE Powerful - and due to the design - can MOVE Quickly and Accurately MUCH Bigger Gantries! The advantages of this should be VERY OBVIOUS To most Hard Core 3DP folks! Since - in the past - the idea is to keep weight LOW on your Gantry - including using Small light weight motors for the extruder. But, if you have a Powerful motion system for the Gantry - which is also Accurate - then BOOM - that has the potential to be a Major Game-Changer in the 3DP World!!!
All that being said...
A couple of the Eng's at Essentium - at the end - when everything was collapsing - were bitching that there were DESIGN issue problems with the printer - and thus it was kinda Bound To Fail...

That being said - the Essentium printers ARE Still Being Supported:    KKO3D Essentium and Nexa3D Support Page

And, yup - KKO is the initials of my manager - and he is a Cool Dude!!!

I'm actually going to be seeing him at an Essentium Reunion I am organizing - at Tustin, CA Board & Brew on Thur. 7/23/26 - to meet up with me whilst I am in the area - right after SIGGraph is over...

Should be Seriously FUN Times!!!

Kurt I know on print samples I’ve seen from the Magneto X (which is currently sold out) there are ZERO VFA’s.  Vertical walls show zero ringing at all. I believe the belt teeth on idler pulleys adds in a lot of that visual ringing. To me that is a huge advantage of the linear motors.

WOW Bryan - I was going to try and do a little AI research on the Peopoly machine - so, glad to hear your feedback!!!!

Gotta say - I LOVE the name of the Machine - "Magneto X" - seriously - the creators MUST be HUGE fans of the Marvel Universe!!!     Right???
