Interesting video on multi-material adhesion

There's a recent YouTube video from JanTec Engineering about testing adhesion between different filament types (e.g. PLA-PETG, ABS-TPU, etc).

There were two interesting bits in particular, the first was a summary table of the adhesion tests (4:41 into video):

There's been much discussion on the podcast about PLA-PETG printing and that's borne out by these tests.

The other interesting comment was the idea of using a single layer of PLA (8:51 into video) on the build plate and then printing ABS on top of it for the rest of the print as a way to help ABS printing issues and avoiding warping. He pointed out that you may be able to get by with a lower temperature on the print bed than ABS usually requires (60° instead of 110°).

Ooo… that sounds like a slick idea. Gotta try that.

I don’t understand the graph though. PLA-PLA should be the same as TPU-TPU.

I think the idea was to document the basic layer again for single material prints so you could compare them with multi-material prints. He left off the TPU-TPU numbers though (which I would guess to be pretty high).

If you printed the bottom layer with a clear filament, you probably wouldn't even notice it, though I suppose the sheen might be different.

I have to say - the idea of a single PLA layer - at bottom of an ABS print is kinda SLICK!

Downside...

I would try it on One of my creations I want to re-print, but, print it out of 8 parts - and then Acetone weld the parts together. Problem is - with that PLA 1st layer - that would prevent me from Acetone welding the parts together. AND - I bet that you can NOT so easily remove that 1 layer of PLA!

I never do multi-part prints where you glue them together, so that didn't occur to me. But it would absolutely create havoc with that scenario.

And being hard to remove is kind of the point of doing it. If it was easy to remove it wouldn't help with the warping.

The graph does make sense and I believe if the TPU had been able to stay located in the test housing, it would have produced the highest loading figures. But because it kept slipping out the tool it was a failed test and therefore unmeasurable? Although I think it was wrong for the guy to just put "0", maybe should have highlighted it red or something with an "incomplete test" caption maybe?.

Yeah Scott - exactly - it would Not help the warping problem if it didn't really stick together. 

But, for those folks wanting to print ABS - and it's single parts - this may be an Insanely Cool Trick!

And, it could in theory be implemented on a Single Extruder head printer like the Ender 3 - if one can figure out an Easy way to swap filament. Myself - I've tried to do Pause and Resume on my Ender 3 - but, did NOT have good results with doing it!

Yeah Sophie - that makes a LOT of Sense what you wrote. 

But, now I find it Curious that the TPU/TPU would pop out - but, how come it didn't pop-out, the TPU side - when doing TPU/ABS & TPU/PLA??

Probably because it takes a lot less force for the two varying materials to separate, than it does for the TPU to deform and pop out the tool. I dunno, just a guess to be honest.
