Ok, simpler problem…. Who here know how to get an image turned into an SVG.

So, wanting this logo to be added as line art to a print.

I have tried to follow tutorials for Inkscape and other tools, but I dont get a useable svg into the slicer.   I would like this to come in as a modifier, with of course the dark lines being the logo.

Kurt,

Inkscape is an open source Adobe Illustrator equivalent. It's free, you should download and install it.

Open your jpeg or whatever in Inkscape, save as a svg. It's that simple.

Kurt,

To quote Adobe " The SVG file format is a popular tool for displaying two-dimensional graphics"

You have to pull the SVG file into a program capable of extruding, in other words a 3d modeling program.

Perhaps I didn’t give enough detail  I loaded the png into Inkscape saved it as svg got a rectangle

I loaded the logo as a jpg into many online converters saved it as svgs got a rectangle

I have done this before with simpler images (pictures of emojis) and it has worked fine.

Not sure what my problem is

Anything weird in creating this file?  I'm no Inkscape savant, but when I import it into a new doc, import appears to be behind the page.  The lines are very faint, except for this one "slash" on the left hand side.  Actually, I think the lines of the drawing may actually be "empty"?

Kurt, here is an SVG, see if this works for you.

This was an extremely low resolution file. The reason it "disappears" is due to it being transparent, and only white (except whatever that smudge on the left is). If you put it on say a green background, the guy would look green. Essentially I just stuck it in photoshop on top of a black background.

You can't simply open the file in inkscape and save it as an SVG - the art has to be converted to vector format first (I just used image trace in Illustrator).

Thanks for the great Thread, YUM.

Sadly, though folks tried to help me, none of the SVG’s actually gave me a useful modifier.

Sigh.  Onward to the next project.

Kurt,

This was a useful learning thread in any event.

I for one was not aware of the transparency attribute and have never used it.

I mainly convert images files to svg with the ultimate goal of generating dxf files for my laser cutter or cnc router, for cutting flat stock.

Is there a way of setting transparency to zero in order to give you a solid line svg?

Yeah dude - sorry about your SVG problem!

During my lunch break - I did quickly try out this SAM 3D thing. I had a pic of the house I grew up in - my father designed it - the pic was from this past Thanksgiving when I made a visit to upstate NY & actually dropped by to see the house. SAM tried to covert it into 3D - but, did a WRONG assumption - trying to show the roof as pitched at the top - when in fact it's a Flat roof - and a VERY Different style of house. Here's a screenshot of it's attempt to convert the house into 3D:

And - here's the original pic:

Anything meta and everything AI is banned at work (NDA issues) but I'll check it out tonight. Is there an executable to download? browsing on my phone it looked like it went to GIT repository.

Mark, PNGs can contain transparency. The particular one in question was simply white on a transparent background. When shown on a web page, whatever the background color of the webpage was would be what the outline of the image would be. I just opened it into photoshop, stuck it on black and flattened the image. You could do the same in other image editors, like GIMP for instance.

Also, typically the vector programs don't trace white as that's considered to be the paper when printing. So trying to trace it would simply give you nothing.

It's a bit confusing. It seems to be running in a webpage. Even though I saw some kind of reference to a DL.

Kurt,

It's called: How to Adjust the Opacity Of A Shape in Inkscape

It seems to me you should be able to make your transparent logo, solid and visible

Kurt-1,

In exchange for hijacking your thread I gave that SAM tool a very unfair test.

I took a different copy of that logo,  and I loaded it and asked it to convert it.

So, I got a dude exercising who has pronounced "pecs" (being nice here) - who is an amputee and whose remaining knee has two knee caps

Short rotating video of what I got (sorry about dirt on my screen)

Wow Mr. Doppelgänger - kind of a funny 3D animation. Cool. Even though it looks ODD for the "human" that it tried to create!
