I was wondering what others thought of the Creality Sonic Pad?
From the video I watched, it looked like the answer to our prayers!

Or is it just a "somewhat" decent way of speeding up a print?
At 400% speed the quality is suppose to be GREAT!

I've read the discussions about this technology in the forum, but never thought much about incorporating it into my printer...

Until now!

So what you think?

I think it's just a way to run Klipper on one of their printers easier. I don't know if it would speed up anything or not. I keep seeing people saying klippers input shaping will let you go faster but I haven't tried it.

I watched a YouTube video of a person that showed printing with the input shaping pad at 50 mm/sec. (stock speed), then printed at 100%, 200%, 300%, 400%.

That's 50, 150, 200, 250 mm/sec.

And finer detailed prints at 4-5 times faster.

I was quite impressed to think that input shaping would allow that speed with that great of detail.

And on a stock Ender 3 pro...

I would want to see them print the same item at the different speeds and compare how long it took to complete. You can set the speed to whatever you want and it may not actually get up to that speed.

Creality Sonic Pad: 3D Printing at it's Fastest

By The Real Sam Prentice

I prints a cube at different speeds and examines them.

The cube's 1st print was 30 minutes, the last was 6 minutes and comments about them.

There is a pretty significant difference printing large, complex shapes at speed, compared to printing tiny cubes, which makes “tests” of this hardware using test cubes a bit naff.

That said, I have zero doubts that using Klipper with input shaping is going to produce better prints at higher speeds than using stock Marlin. That is what Klipper and input shaping was designed to do, and it has been tested over many years.

Could you do it cheaper than with the Sonic Pad? Undoubtedly, especially if you already have a Raspberry Pi, since the only costs then would be for an accelerometer and some cabling.

Still, it is a fast way to improve your prints, although if you are putting it on an Ender 3, there is a lot more you could do for the money.

Yeah - Klipper seems to be a bit of a Game Changer.

But - Cost for Sonic Pad? A Link? Not from YOU Luke - but from Original Poster - cuz Some folks like me are Lazy...

Kurt,

They seem to be around the $150USD mark on AliExpress, or you know, about the same price as an Ender 3.

It is an expensive add-on for that printer, given a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W will run Klipper fine, and can be had for about $35, plus another $5 for an accelerometer. Of course then you would have no screen (you don’t need one), but then you can get a pretty good screen, and still be in front by a long way…

I agree - if you consider price of an Ender - that Add-on is TOO Pricey, and your option suggestion is much cheaper!

It think you are paying for convience. I setup klipper on a pi3 with a display and it took quite a bit of messing around to get klipper screen to work. It would probably be easier on a ender 3 though since there are so many of those. It doesn't take much upgrading to exceed the price of the printer when it cost 200 so I think there are many people that won't be bothered by the price.

But if you had plans to buy an Ender 3, then immediately improve it with a Sonic Pad, you would probably just be better off buying a better printer to start with.

The Ender 3 is an entry level printer. The kind you would recommend to a tween or teenager as their first machine. If you upgrade to Klipper, it is still just an entry level printer running a better Firmware. I think the Sonic Pad would be a massive overcapitalisation.

I agree with Luke… and I’d like to add…
There’s other things that effect the quality of the print when you go fast that input shaping does absolutely nothing to eliminate. You will still get overshoots and othe things from backlash within the gantries of the three axes.
