I wonder HOW Many folks in this forum remember the Famous JetGuy!?!?!

I tried a while ago to Track him down. I was even digging - and found the name of his buddy, who lived near him - and that other guy was either in the Jet Powered Golf Cart videos - or he took them. But, even in finding HIM - and his YouTube channel - I could NOT Even find THAT dude on the web - and a way to contact him!

So - ALL of my digging to find JetGuy - amounted to Crap - and I could NOT Track him down. I even have not One but Two email addy's for him - and he doesn't reply. I had his Cell # - and he does NOT Reply to Txt Msgs or Phone calls. Last I spoke to him was late 2018 - and we had a Wonderful long Chat. But, after that - NOTHING!!!

Will admit - I even tried finding obituaries - and could not find anything.

FYI - his full name was Vernon "JetGuy" Barry!

Yeah Darrell - me too! Which is what I am worried about!

Was also curious to know if any folks here had thoughts on how to search for the whereabouts of someone via an online website - that does NOT Charge $ to find someone...

EXCELLENT Detective work Ken!!!

Yes, I personally know Fredini - and I know about the big printer that JetGuy built for him. And, at one point - Fred did a full body scan of me at NYC Maker Faire. I then used that scan to make me into a King Chess piece years ago!

Thanks to Ken for finding his prior address - I was able to do a Public Records search - and it only cost me $1 to do!!!

Here's some of that search. And, yeah - middle initial makes sense - as his parents loved Chuck Barry - thus his middle name is actually Chuck (or "C." as noted in the report):
JetGuy Search.jpg

FYI - as it IS a Public Record - I figured it was Valid to show some of the results here. The good thing is that it does show him as still alive!

I am now in the process of trying the phone #'s in the record - as Mobile # is NOT the same one I have. It also lists a Landline - which almost NOBODY uses these days. I shall definitely report back if I find something!

Based upon the public search for JetGuy - it lists a bunch of family members. So, I reached out to all of them via the email addresses listed in the public records - but, I already have fails on 3 of the email addys. And, of those that did NOT fail - I have gotten no response. I did another follow-up today - to include several more of the family members - but, again - 1 of those email addys was also bad. I also included a pic of me hanging with JetGuy at Maker Faire 2014 - which I am including here:

Fredini was the guy who was scanning people at the 2015 San Mateo Maker Faire. I had him scan me, and since I had a working printer in those days, I printed a couple copies of myself.

Cool - I didn't know Fredini also showed up in San Mateo! But, yeah - he also scanned me at NYC MF.

Just a QUICK Update...

I sent a connection request - as well as a message - to James Armstrong on LinkedIn. And, for those of you who know JetGuy - James was his good buddy, lived near him - and did the various videos with him.

Well, yesterday - James replied to my message - AND - he accepted my connection request. I just replied back to him - and I hope to hear back from him about JetGuy - so I can give a better follow-up.

This comment is mostly aimed at You Darrell & Andy.

James got back to me again. He was really happy to hear from me. Said he runs into JetGuy at the local Hobby Train place - as I know JetGuy was getting Deeply into Trains when I last spoke to him on the phone. So, James asked for my contact info - I gave him my email addy & Cell # - and he said he would pass it along to JetGuy!

Good to hear JetGuy is still around!

There was another guy who used to hang around, who you've met--He was younger and a chemical engineer I think. Don't recall his name.

Yeah - I'm sure who that was. OR - maybe you were referring to Ryan - who wrote that book?!?!?

I really am hoping that after James gives JetGuy my info - that I hear back from JetGuy!

We shall see...

Gosh - I'm pickin' my brain - but, just can't remember his last name. Andy will know. I remember him talking about chemical stuff - I think he was even involved in the famous Exxon Valdez cleanup!

But, yeah - and Ryan put a couple pics of my Dragon and Dragon body parts into his book. Which REALLY Thrilled me when he asked for pics!!!  FYI - the pics were in regards to his point - to cut and object into parts - as opposed to always trying to print a single Big part!

OK - I did a quick search - it's Ryan Carlyle - here's his book on Amazon:   3D Printer Engineering: Volume 1: Motion Platform Design: Carlyle, Ryan: 9798362427375: Amazon.com: Books

That is the guy! Did he ever have a nickname? Like ChemGuy, instead of JetGuy?

To my Recollection (which in my Leaky Memory Banks - that can't always be trusted) - No - I don't believe he did.

It was only Weirdos like Me & JetGuy who would come up with strange nicknames.

...in that regards.

When I applied to NYC World Maker Faire 2012 - as part of the application - they wanted some kind of name of my exhibit space. Cause, in some instances, it's like a co. name, or a club/org name - so, on the spot - I quickly came up with "Bot-Guy". Because, for those that don't know this - early 3D Printers were affectionately referred to as Bots. Which makes sense, and I would many times tell people who don't know much about 3DP's - that a 3DP is essentially a Robot that works on the insides of itself - as opposed to outside (like robot arms).  However, I also want to make clear THAT was the reason - as opposed to my nickname coming from me stealing part of the MakerBot name - since, I started with a CupCake.

So - there you have it - the Birth of the Bot-Guy...

Yeah Scott - that's TOO BAD!

So, here's the deal...

I was in touch with Ryan directly via email, shortly after he released the book - and he started to be MIA in the forum.  And, more time started going by and he was still MIA - and I actually reached out to him to find out how he was doing. I was a bit worries about him going MIA. So, he got back to me - he let me know that LIFE got in the way.

Both things happened about the same time, as he moved to a new home - and then he also had a child. Who knows, since then - maybe he now has MORE than one! But, yeah - he told me that's why he was no longer responsive in the forum. And, I suspect it was also the reason why he never released another volume of his book!

Now - since Darrell brought up Ryan - and after writing this reply - I figured - maybe it's time I push back and see how Ryan is doing! I will indeed report back here...

I believe that Ryan finished the second volume of his book series.

I pulled his leg on another website, where he said he'd have to release it in PDF format due to publishing contraints, but didn't wish to because of fear boot leg copying.

Wow - I didn't realize he actually completed a 2nd volume!

And, yeah - bootlegging on the web has always been rampant. It makes me wonder - if I was to do a general Google search, would I find that people posted MY Book - the PDF version - on other webpages for Free download. I'm kinda curious about that...

Now, as for Ryan - he actually replied back to me via email overnight. This was his reply:
"Hi Kurt! I’m still alive and kicking, just haven’t had a lot of time or energy for 3D printing lately. I print stuff occasionally, and hang out a little bit on Reddit and Facebook printing groups. Haven’t built any printers in years though. The fun for me was more in the “early adopter” phase and we’re pretty much past that now.
Hope you’re doing well!
Ryan Carlyle"

I too was wondering about Ryan. Always enjoyed his detailed technical info on stuff. I check in here from time to time but nothing really new going on. I feel the same thing as Ryan, 3D printers are common place, it used to be a novelty, now almost everyone has one or doing something with one. That's great to see, and also kinda boring cause everyone is an expert now. 3d Printing has become easy and a lot of the early struggles have been smoothed out. Heck I don't even get 3D printing nerd youtube video recommendations anymore. Used to watch him all the time. Hobby 3d printing has been largely normalized.

Anyone in Vegas? Going to be there in a couple weeks for a national pool team tournament at the Rio.

Go Chiefs!!! I live Chief's Kingdom so exiting times for the last few years.

Hello there Mr. Kansas!

Well - I partially agree with you. Yes, in the world of 3D Printing - desktop & hobby level 3D Printing is VERY Common place these days. Seems everyone is getting into it - OR - they Know someone that has a 3D Printer.

But, as for your comment of " 3d Printing has become easy and a lot of the early struggles have been smoothed out" - I kind of disagree on that.

Yeah - Andy has drummed up support for the Cult of Full Contact Support - a method that makes a LOT of sense. But, not all printers created equally, and, sure - seems all issues are resolved if you get a Bambu X1C - but, not everyone can afford that. And, some printers are moving faster - which is cool. Some of the Tech is getting more advanced. Race to bottom has produced $100 3DP's - when on Sale at MC.

And, some folks come up with new experimental methods of printing.

Heck - I am now in touch with a dude on LinkedIn. We connected via a FoxPro programmer group on LinkedIn - and then we officially connected - so he's now in my network. I was posting in that group - in regards to getting work.

Then - the guy REALLY Surprised me - told me he has a patent on a new 3DP technique for metal printing - and he 3D Prints jewelry with his method. I got no more details than that - but, I am trying to pull more info out of him - as I'm curious...

Sorry for the long delay Kurt.   Remember way back when Jet Guy wanted to see (and take apart) the new MakerBot Replicator printer that was released after  Stratasys  purchased MakerBot?  I was the one who sent my new Replicator to him and in return, he was going to make me a Core XY printer that was enclosed for printing ABS.   You asked me to print your dragon head on it.

OH SNAP!

So - JetGuy DID build you that Bigger sized printer - and you DID print the Dragon head in parts!

Kinda funny the way you wrote your reply - as you said Jetguy "was going to make me a Core XY printer" - and you stated that I asked you do print the Dragon head - but, in fact YOU DID!

Gotta say - it's AWESOME to see you back here!!!

You not only printed the Dragon head - but, also the Central Core of each of the Dragon's Feet!

Did you ever see the final outcome of the parts you worked on? Or the pic of the final completed Dragon???

I had been in contact with James Armstrong - back in February of this year via LinkedIn - and he was going to speak to JetGuy about me. James was essentially the BFF of JetGuy - AFAIK - back in the days when JetGuy was active in the 3DP world. I just messaged James again on LI - and I WILL Surely report back here - if James gets back to me. Sadly - after my last LI msg to James in Feb - he never replied back. Hopefully he WILL this time around...
