Too little too late? I still use Ver 4.1.... Have tried other slicers like Cura but always come back to S3d....

4.1.1 for me
I'm afraid to change, I understand it pretty well and get what I expect so why risk it?

The information about changes isn't very clear. Hopefully you will be able to run the old version alongside of 5.

I'm not afraid of it and the cost isn't too bad to upgrade. I think they are in the early stages of setting up the upgrade site.

Hopefully finally hear more soon. Crazy it has been this long for any updates. Ver 4 does everything i need though and I have 100s of factory files saved with successful print settings, so hopefully will be able to import those.

4.1.1 works well for me.  I have had success with the current release of PrusaSlicer 2.4+ after getting some great help on this forum last year.  Unfortunately, PrusaSlicer falls short for about 5 - 10% of my models - all of which are stupid simple boxes with one or two interior walls.  For some screwball reason, the interior gets all "salmon skinned" around the interior walls when using PrusaSlicer but is perfectly fine with S3D.

I wasn't able to find any details about the benefits of S3D 5, I fear that it will lose its perfection for me when moving to the new version, but will have to see.  The upgrade price isn't too bad, especially given the time since the last release.

I hesitate to just stick with S3D since it is getting that old software smell and is just one Windows upgrade away from kicking the bucket.  PrusaSlicer has much better backing / longevity.

I have no reason to upgrade from Windows 10, so OS isn't a big issue. I run S3d mostly on a Mac.  I've been thinking about trying SuperSlicer, but S3d as old as it is does everything I need.

All I get when clicking that link is a Wordpress login page.
Can you share more info about S3D 5?

Looks like they hid that page, I don't think it was live yet, just a sandboxed page. It had upgrade info on it but you couldn't upgrade using the link.

They posted a few features, I don't remember what they are, but said there are 100s of changes coming. No official announcement was made.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

The reality is that S3D V4.1 is fallow, and hasn’t seen substantial updates in many years. It is arguably obsolete, compared to Cura and Prusaslicer, particularly with the release of the Arachne engine for Cura (and which has been ported to Prusaslicer and is currently in Beta testing), which basically allows you to get almost the same results using a 0.6mm nozzle as you used to get with a 0.4mm nozzle, but with all the speed increases and other advantages of using a larger nozzle.

Similarly, S3D is vapourware that has been coming any minute now for years. It is the rumour of v5 that keeps people sticking with v4.

I suspect the wicked problem for S3D v5 is that it will need to be not just as good, but a lot better than the free slicers to justify the cost, and it will get torn apart by reviewers when it isn’t. Problem is that the free slicers are so much better than they were in 2018 (when the last major version of S3D came out), that it will be a struggle for S3D to be even just as good, let alone so much better to justify spending more than the cost of an entry-level printer on the slicer. Unless S3D is nothing short of revolutionary, it will have a tough time in a competitive market.

That's really interesting... the engine ported to other slicers?

I had heard from a friend in the industry that Ultimaker funds the development of Cura, but doesn't really have as much control as one would think over the code. The main developer of Cura is funded by Ultimaker, Ulti seems to have first dibs on the product, and gets the most mileage from it.

However, to see the engine ported to other slicers that really decreases the significance of the whole Cura brand.

That’s what Open Source means - others can use the software for other purposes.

Interesting to see Makerbot and Ultimaker merge.

One thing that irritates me about Cura, SuperSlicer, etc. is no default support for Makerbot and clones.

To be honest, I’ve never seen the lack of a profile for a printer as an issue, seeing as how most/all of my printers are unique designs (either designed and built from scratch or heavily modified).

I’ve been creating my own profiles from scratch forever.

It is nice to have a starting point for a profile especially for printers that have been available for over 8 years.
