I have an interesting question for folks here!

So, let's say there is a Similar job that exists at both companies. Essentially a Tech Support position for these resin printers. And, FYI - I really have almost no experience w/resin printers - and they both know that. But, they both also know my extensive experience in 3D Printing, as well as customer support tech support like at Northrop-Grumman, and supporting Users of Database systems for my nearly 25-30 years of database systems dev & support work. They also know my teaching background - which relates back to training of customers on printer usage or problem resolution.

Now, the Nexa3D job - its purely onsite in Ventura here in CA - and remotely helping out users. And, also assisting with development of training materials and database system type FAQs for user self help. I will also note, the Nexa3D printer is a very high tech desktop model.

But, with EnvisionTec - it will be more like Large industrial type models of resin printers. And, an interesting side to this position - its more a Field Serv. Engineer - so I will be flying around the USA, going to customers directly to help resolving 3D Printing issues, or doing minimal fixes and bringing parts along. In addition, the travel may only be 2-3 weeks worth out of the month, and when not traveling to customer sites - I will instead be working Remote (from home) - doing customer support.

Therefore, I am curious. Based upon the co's and jobs described, what would you pick? I'm also curious to hear from folks who have experience with either co./printers.  As both positions are sounding pretty great to me. And - when traveling, the other perk is - I get ALL the frequent flyer miles from airlines, hotels and rental cars. So, after a while - I could go on vacations - and pay almost NOTHING! Which to me is an Awesome Perk! And, I DO Love to travel. So - I find that a fun option. But, even they warned me that after a while - ALL The Travel could wear you down!!!

Anyway - I look forward to what people have to say - as I get down to the wire on these 2 potential positions.

Envisiontec - Because the parent Desktop Metal is publicly funded (very well !) and you probably have options to internally move across their dental, metal, sand etc. Product lines.

Nexa3d is a startup..privately funded..yet to break even...revenues unknown and I have not yet seen a product differentiation apart from speed.
They still use 385nm resins and have the same features (auto refill, UV curing box) that Phrozen etc. have at a lower price point.

End of day you have to weigh upon product USP,  potential to grow on the job and job security all things else like cash, equity, benefits, perks being equal in both offers.

Or
Keep looking.
You’re not an SLA vet and these jobs assume you are… at least Envisiontec does.
OTOH the Nexa3d may not require you’re being able to trouble shoot a customers machines in real-time. Imagine traveling to a customer and not being able to help them. You won’t have that job for very long!. Also… repeated traveling will wear you down fast.

Hey there Vishal,

Its good to hear from you again. Of course, we are WAY Overdue to meet up. Feel free to DM me...

And, thanks for the feedback. I agree, having a MUCH Larger Umbrella co. over the the co. you work for - is always a great idea! As you know its quite stable - as is with Desktop Metal. And, true - it would be awesome to get involved with something like metal 3D Printing - especially as I have 1 pet project of mine I'd just LOVE to throw at a Metal printer!!!

Yes, I believe the big differentiator is the Speed of the printing - AFAIK. They do a technique similar to Carbon3D, but, it seems their technique at Nexa3D may be more sophisticated than Carbon3D!

Am curious - what is meant by USP? Of course, there's always this option that you are at a Startup that hits REALLY BIG, and then you are really set for retirement! But, yeah - I'm already had experience working at a Start-up type co., Essentium, which ended Badly!

Sorry for my slow reply on this...

And, actually - you're wrong about your assumption. Both co's KNOW I have no real experience w/Resin printing. Except for my time at Essentium, where I explained I worked directly with one of the engineers that was using the resin printers we had. I explained that one project was making some parts for the new 240 3DP's at Essentium, and I was printing parts on a 180, which this engineer was also printing parts on the resin printer (I think it was a Photon). And, at one point - I was collaborating with them in regards to slicing of the parts, and specifically, orienting them in the slicer program for the resin printer. So - yeah, other than that - both co's do indeed know I am know a Resin guy, purely an FDM kinda Dude! But, they are BOTH Still very interested in me!!!

But, what you say is true - it would be VERY Uncomfortable to be at an Envision client, and not be able to properly fix their machine. That being said - as part of the Envision deal, they would ship me to Michigan, where I would do training for 2-3 weeks.

As for travel wearing me down - yeah, maybe. Upside - I would get ALL the frequent flyer miles for flights, rental cars and hotels. So, that means that I could potentially go on free vacations - where I need only buy Food and lots to Drink!!!

Another benefit of the travel. They told me that if I am traveling to a location where I have friends or family, the travel plans can be made to straddle a weekend - so that during the weekend I could hang with the friends or family. Which would be Awesome!

Lastly, and this is Quite exciting to me - I got a contact back from another job application, and they want me to interview with them. Its Relativity, that does Metal 3D Printing of Rockets - AND - its RIGHT here in my back yard in Long Beach!!!

Will try and keep folks posted on the outcomes...

VRFX,

Congratulations on all these fantastic opportunities!

Between EnvisionTec and Nexa3D I vote EnvisionTech. Honestly, I'm basing my vote on reading between the lines of your posts thus far. Based on what you've written about both companies, you seem most excited about EnvisionTec! It also seems like it may provide you more stability and flexibility. I'm curious to know what you find about Relativity though.

Much success!

Thank you SO Much Nikki for your replies - and to be so excited about new opportunities for me!

Truthfully - I'm torn between Envision & Nexa. Sure - the opportunity to travel - meet a lot of clients - see cool projects at different co's - get a TON of frequent flyer miles for flights/hotels/rental cars - its all quite awesome! And, they are going to heavily train me for the position - like shipping my humanoid form to Michigan for like 2-3 weeks, which is the headquarters. And, I'm always up for learning new stuff indeed!!!

But - Nexa - its also cool, since they will want me not only to support printers, but potentially help develop training materials, beef up their database for the FAQ's, potentially even make training videos. Which, really allows me to Apply a LOT of my background (as my background is teaching 3D CG, MANY years of database systems work - as well as 3D Printing).

That's why I am torn between the jobs.

Now, Relativity - that really excites me, not only because I would be Directly involved with Metal 3DP's - but, also - to be involved in a co. that's directly involved in Space exploration and getting humans onto other planets like Mars. So - yeah - the opportunity to be involved with Space missions would be AMAZING! Downside - that job is Purely a 3DP Tech - and I don't think it will pay as well as the other 2. But, I may find out more about that tomorrow - in my 1st of 8 interviews - with the 1st one being with the co. recruiter.

I will definitely keep everyone posted as to how the Entire thing Pans Out...

So - Interesting times...

Well, yesterday - I get the rejection from the Nexa3D Job. Then, this morning I get a call from EnvisionTec/Desktop Metal - and was informed they ARE offering me that job!

Although - I actually interviewed w/HR this past Tues. for Relativity - and have the 2nd interview, this time with Hiring Mgr - on Monday. I may reach out to Relativity - to try and push things forward. Mainly just to ask what is the Pay. And also let them know I got an offer - as the HR woman there was asking about my other searches. Will see what happens. But, otherwise - I will be shipping out to Michigan for 2-3 weeks of onsite training - and will probably travel there in about a week or so.

So - there you have it...

Finally - a Decent Outcome!

Thanks Andy. But, FYI - I will be supporting their larger machines, and its a wide range of customer use cases - definitely not only Dental.

Of course, for me - the traveling will be a bonus. And, piling up frequent flyer & hotel & rental car points will be GREAT - and allow me Free vacations in near future!!!

If this is hourly I would expect to be getting paid lots of overtime for all the travel time too!

Hey Kurt, enjoy the travel life! Some people love it, and some people love it for a while. So keep an eye out for what looks like it might be the next good step, in case the appeal of the that lifestyle starts to fade. My cousin was a field engineer as a career, and racked up so many flight miles that he can do all the pleasure travel he wants. And now that he's done with that job, he hates travel so much those free flights go unused. I guess the trick is to enjoy the ride, but know when to get off.
