Hey folks,
I just got back to this project again, which I was discussing in another thread - but I think at the time I was hijacking that thread! So - time to start a new thread.
I will add, as a pre-cursor - the plan is to make the Face of the pumpkin as plastic parts - and that apply those parts to the pumpkin. So, that's where 3D Printing comes into play. Of course, the plastic I am dipping the pumpkin in - its all from Scrap plastic that I liquidate with Acetone. Also, another fun note - since I've had my hands on more WHITE ABS than anything else - I've started mixing in Clothing Dye to the liquid plastic. So, the Stem - is coated in liquid ABS that was colorized with Green dye. I think I DID show a pic of the Dipped stem before. But when it dried - it did NOT look good. Green color became TOO Light colored. So, I added MORE Dye to the liquid green plastic - and now it looks good.
So - 1st off, I figured folks might get a kick out of this pic - pumpkin up-ended to get the stem dipped into the green liquid plastic:
Then, the Stem after it dried - and now it looks good:
Now, time to dip the main pumpkin body. This should also make the project rather Interesting! Why? Cause I am coating the pumpkin in Glow-in-the-Dark liquid plastic! There are 2 reasons. Main reason, when the GITD plastic dries - it is actually Semi-Transparent. I actually kinda stumbled upon that fact. Which I also applied that trick to making fake beer pouring out of beer cans onto a canvas. But - alas - I digress...
But, yeah - I really wanted the orange pumpkin skin to still Appear as orange after dipped - that's part of the concept of this project. Of course, now, it will be cool if the pumpkin actually properly Glows once I complete the project. We shall have to see if it works out. Anyway - this pic is me prepping to Dip the main pumpkin body:
So, next - start dipping it. This pic shows me in process of dipping it:
Then, you can see - right after dipping it - it's quite shiny:
However, the coating just looked TOO Thin. So, I dipped it again:
Still, that's with it totally wet. Will have to see what it looks like when it dries. Once it does - I will follow-up with more pics.
Of course, I can't wait till it dries fully - then I want to take it from outside (where its currently drying) - and bring it inside in the daytime (after it soaks up a lot of sunlight) - and bring it into the bathroom, shut down, lights off - and see if it Glows. If it does look good - I will take a pic of it - and share it here!
L8r,
-K
P.S. Although this posting is to the 3D Printing forum - I did BCC a couple of my buddies - so, guys - don't be surprised JV & JB!

Nope - No Such sterilization process had occurred! And, I DO Expect it to Rot - but, from the inside out. So, by containing the outer surface, the hope is that it take Longer to rot. Rotting INSIDE the pumpkin 1st - then taking a while for Rot to occur on the skin of the pumpkin!
That being said - I got Great news on the results of last night's work on the pumpkin. Will be posting that momentarily. Also, I'm going to post some Up Close & Personal pics of my other plasticated plants project - and let you see what shows "rot" and what parts are not discernably rotten. Although, in that case - its regular liquid ABS - not glowing stuff - and that stuff dries Purely Opaque! So - Hold tight - I will be back shortly with my next follow-up...

Won't the pumpkin keep degrading from the inside or did you sterilize it ?
Or are you aiming for a GITD hollow of the pumpkin 5 years down the road? :)Best-Vishal
