I wonder whether this might be received as an ‘oh not other 3d printer advice thread’. If it is I apologise, please feel free to boot me.
But here goes.

I have a variety of desktop size printers happily working (A1s, U1, mini’s). I wanted to expand the size a bit and went for the Creality E3 Max. Nice enough printer, but sending it back the thing just couldn’t pass a first layer test with supervision and tinkering with Z-offsets. Ploughed into bed on first run after self test / cal.
(Perhaps become a bit lazy with the A1’s just work experience - meh).

Return shipping label on its way. So looking for an alternative.

Thinking

Sovol 08 Max
Neptune 4 Max (budget friendly but some mixed reviews on early iterations).

Rat Rig - perhaps. Bit out of my budget (both £ and Time)

Upgradability is key for me. There appeared to be hardly any upgrades for the Ender 5 Max.

Welcome any thoughts or boot me into the weeds - whichever comes first.

The SV08 is essentially a prebuilt Voron, and has a large community. That would get my vote.

I'm thinking of getting one and installing INDX on it.

Yes it’s with a view to future third party innovations that im thinking. INDX perhaps. Saw a neat thing on 3D Printing Nerd yesterday with a radial tool changer.

The ender 5 max was doing this a lot. And sure one can just the z-offset and get better results quite quickly, but if a machine is advertised as ‘perfect first layer everytime’….
On reflection that is quite a clams for any manufacturer.

The SV08 Max is so large, you could fit probably 8 full tool changer tools (like the Stealthchanger) on it. That would be better than INDX.

I don't have room for the Max, I'd get just the SV08.

I have an inkling Sovol will release one with the INDX pre installed, maybe an SV09.

It’s perhaps not so much about the colours for me, different materials and nozzle sizes yes. But reliable filament refill. Printing something large in those bigger machines needs a lot of filament. So good to have another 5kg loaded ready to continue whilst away from a 48 hour print.
