Long-time listener, first-time poster.  I am a member of several 3D printing groups, one of which was talking about software called HueForge.  It seems to use the thickness of the filament to gradient colors and create 3D prints of images in color.  Below is a link to the software:

https://shop.thehueforge.com/

Also, I suggest possibly making a Discord server to chat in real-time.  Recently they also added forum threads, so it would be similar to this group.  If you have any questions I can probably help, I have been coding chatbots for Discord for years and know it pretty well.

Glad to finally join the group, i have enjoyed the podcast for a long time.

Hello there Mr. Cook.

Thanks for sharing. It is interesting stuff indeed.

I know there are semi-translucent PLA and PETG filaments. Are some of those types of filaments already in the catalog for HueForge? I'm just curious. I did read the writeup about how the SW works, its pretty cool. But, yeah, was wondering if the current catalog of filaments for usage are truly standard PLA type opaque filaments. And, it does indeed make sense that a grey or black filament has a MUCH lower TD value.

Hueforge? ooo... That looks like fun... Thanks!
Discord? I'm not into realtime group chats, but for sure I would not say no if folks here wanted to do something like that. I used Discord once in working with those weird feeders I had on the TC a couple years back. It did not work well at all. The devs were in Aus. and the time diff made it impossible. I also did a group chat with some 3D Printing related Patreon folks. It was fun for awhile, but it took too much of my time.

Yeah, Andy - it does look interesting. I'd be intrigued to see you dive into it a little, and then maybe chat about it as a topic on your podcast.

Now, I know its discussed on the site that HueForge can be accomplished with filament swapping. But, since you have your new XL toolchanger - I'd be rather intrigued to see what you could accomplish with it. Heck, if the original suggestion for HF was manual filament swapping - that means, in your case - if you did swapping - you could potentially use like what - 8 or 10 filaments - assuming a single swap per tool?

Of course, I'm sure you already have plenty on your plate.

The thing that caught my eye about HueForge are the results like this

I know very little about it but figured it would be a good news topic at least.

As for Discord I could help make a server to test and set up if you want Andy, and later hand over right to you to be the owner.  if you ever want to give it a shot let me know.  I think I might be a good supplement to this forum instead of a replacement.

I have a discord with a few user from here on it as well. I like reading these threads, maybe nostalgic.

I don't mind discord though, my server is fairly silent so might be why I like it. Ha ha

Justus - did you print that? Is it all PLA?

Honestly, I look at that - its Cool - but, I think if it was all printed in ABS - and then an Acetone Vapor smoothing was applied to the print - it could smooth it all out and clean up problematic areas. But, don't know if the whole colors things will hold up to the Smoothing!

How many filaments were used? 3 Colors of PLA???

Hello everyone!  I'm also a frequent listener, forum lurker, and first time poster.  I've been printing for about a year and a half now so I don't have a wealth of experience but I thoroughly enjoy this hobby and learn every time I print.

I heard about HueForge on another podcast interviewing the creator.  I dug into it, tried a print, then bought the software since its only $18 for a personal license at the moment.  The software can do both traditional lithophanes and color lithophanes as well.  Most examples you see are more like a painting.  The bottom layer is normally solid black, then different colors are added to modify the image.  The software gives you a side by side comparison with the original and modified image so you can adjust until you are satisfied. You can have only 1 filament swap or a lot.  Its 1 color per layer (or multiple layers of said color) so there isn't a need for in-layer color changes.  Once you are satisfied, the software outputs an STL and a text file to tell you when to program the color swaps.  Then slice per normal.
One thing to note, HueForge is designed to work with very small layer heights (.04 to .08).  This is how such great detail is accomplished with just a handful of layers and color swaps.  The prints come out like they are painted on canvas.  The .04 layer height gives it that effect and is what plays into the light transmittance.  I still have to really dive into the software but the outcomes of others look great.  Just search Printables for HueForge and take a gander.

I hope this helps!  For the record, I've only dabbled in the software.  My only print was a test print of a peony from the HueForge creator's Printables page.

Thanks for the feedback Mr. Cook.

Also - Anthony - just want to make one comment in regards to what you stated, especially since Andy the Podcast host, actually mentioned it in another reply of his just the past couple days (or maybe I heard him say it in a podcast episode). That is, in regards to your statement of "very small layer heights (.04 to .08)" - that can be rather problematic, as its difficult enough to get down to a 0.1mm layer height, much less one even smaller than that.

But, your feedback is still good to know!

I do lots of 0.05mm prints, and rarely go larger than 0.01mm layers. What trouble are you having? I have been printing PETG at these heights 24/7 across multiple machine brands since 2014 roughly.

Thanks for pointing out Andy’s comments about layer heights.  I agree that smaller layer heights can be challenging.  That is due to nuances.  As with many other things in 3D printing the general guidelines of printing at a “normal” .2 heights with a .4 nozzle don’t entirely translate at much lower heights.  It’s definitely not significantly difficult but there is a learning curve.  I’ll have to post my test print. I just threw it at the printer to see what would happen. Is it perfect? No.  Am I satisfied with the results without tuning it?  Yes.   The software allows you to adjust layer heights so you aren’t locked into such small layers.  That is merely the suggested height from the software creator.  I think .04 or .08 is default.
I’m also not a perfectionist when it comes to printing.  I do it because I simply enjoy it.

"The software can do both traditional lithophanes and color lithophanes as well"

I normally don't do the "someone is wrong on the internet" thing but as the original creator of color lithophanes I will state Hueforge does not do lithophanes. It does backlit pictures, but lithophanes are a very specific thing and folks have been misusing the term from the beginning on this software.

Not to say the software is bad or anything, it is pretty cool.

Hmm it seems I sent my previous message as a private message to Jason.  This is my first time interacting with Google Groups.  I used the reply to author instead of reply all.  I didn't think it would send a private message.   I'll repeat what I sent (as close as I can remember) because its valuable for the conversation.

Jason,

Could you please explain?  I didn't know there was a difference.
I understand that a lithophane uses various thicknesses to create an image that properly displays when illuminated.  I know there is a lithophane "mode" in HueForge, but it could be a misuse of the term as you said.  How does a traditional lithophane differ from the lithophane mode in HueForge?  Also, how are color lithophanes created?  The only type I have seen requires a background picture that is printed on paper and must be aligned with the lithophane.  I'm assuming that's not the process you are referring to.

Thanks!
Tony

Hello,

I'd love to hear other people's experience with Hueforge. It sounds like the software is pretty low effort "plug and play" vs lithopanes. Some nice ones below (hard to believe they are 3d filament)

If it helps anyone find inspiration, Thangs, which will search across Thingiverse, Cults, Printables. Link here: https://thangs.com/tag/hueforge

Thangs has a Discord too, but the conversation seems limited to the designer contests and how to win gift cards

Sorry I missed at the 2022 RRF. Been tough for me lately in the past few years after MRRF 2018 where we met up.

Will you be at OC MF at the end of this month?

Andy - will you be coming to OC Maker Faire?

As of now - I WILL be there assisting one of the Booths at the Faire!
