Hello,

I just listened to this episode on Spotify.

The Prusa XL doesn't use motor current to detect filament feed issues. It has a load cell.

After close to 10 years of listening to the podcast, I finally get to see what Whitney looks like. 😉 Now we need a picture of Andy.

The first reference includes the following…
It is important to note that detecting stuck filament is possible only inside the Nextruder, as pressure builds up from the nozzle to the upper part of the Nextruder. However, if your filament is tangled on the spool, there will be no internal pressure, just outside tension, which the loadcell won't recognize.
So how does this explain the two times it stopped the machine due to spool tangles?
No… the only way I can see how they are detecting it is from feeder motor current draw… just as they do for the current draws from the XY motors during homing. Why on Earth would they not do it when all it would take is some code in the fw?

and BTW... this is not the first nor second time I have seen discrepencies such as this in their online references. It's likely that they contract with someone to provide the English, online support and getting updates to some things may take time. I've had this machine since it first shipped and it has had more than a few FW updates. It's quite possible they added this and it's not yet fully documented.

Hey Andy - VERY Interesting feedback!!!

Honestly - I'm intrigued by what Alyssa wrote - only because of my experience with Load Cell implementations at EnvisionTec!

In fact - there were a HUGE Fiasco and a BIG Co. wide Cover-up about a problem with the Load Cells - and, I was the one who found Part of the Problem and Part of the solution!!!

Hell - customers were going INSANE on the Support calls about the problem, and I ended up getting Very DEEPLY involved in the whole scenario - including - but, NOT Limited to - going to a Customer on the south end of San Diego county - and retrieving TWO 3D Printers - laying them down Sideways in my Car (I know - BAD Idea - but, it was a Fiasco and I had NO Choice) - then delivering them back up to the EnvisionTec facility in the LA area (which NO LONGER Exists) - to troubleshoot the problem and figure out a solution. I even wrote a small FoxPro program - and gave to Tech support folks - as an EXE - as a way to quickly troubleshoot the problem during a customer support call. Then I also worked directly with the Engineers at EnvisionTec - both HW & SW engineers - to try and resolve the issue!

That was some CRAZY TIMES indeed - when you're Deep in the Trenches of a 3DP Co. and dealing with a serious issue...

Alyssa - it's really nice to see your feedback. Especially since there are So VERY Few females on this forum - and few females in 3D Printing compared to Guys!

Believe me - I've worked at Four different 3D Printing co's during my time in SoCal - and found Very few gals working within those companies. But, I Did get the chance to work with Several Female Engineers at Essentium - 1 was an Elec Eng - the other was a Mech Eng - and I truly enjoyed working with both of them. Our field of 3D Printing - as well as Eng. in general truly needs More Women!

Regards,
-Kurt
