Take a look at the reference photos and then the street view of the
front porch, you can see the old facade up there kind of crumbling.
The newer photos on the California Carnegie site show the "fix".
My guess is the facade was masonry and not stone, may have not held up
too well.
Happy modeling!
Yes, sad to be sure. I'm glad to be able to catch most of the historic
architecture on most of what we have modeled so far. I experienced the
same thing when I modeled Chico's Carnegie.
I think it would be worth while, down the road to put together a
collection, even if it's black and white photos, or colorized post
card pictures of what the originals looked like. That way we could
even model the ones that no long exist.
But there is plenty of work to do now, so maybe another day for that
one. HUH?
It's amazing --some of these buildings were monumental and have been
preserved and or re-purposed, others fallen by the wayside. Seems as
if the original Carnegie "Trust" didn't necessarily keep any right to
dictate what happened to the building if it got re-purposed. There is
probably a thesis or book that could be written about the entire
program.
But in the end, did all these libraries make us smarter as was
originally hoped? My guess, after seeing how many there were is that
it helped.
(My mom was a librarian so I am biased.)
Happy modeling,
