Eight members of 3 Cubed competed in the Albany Open Mov.
19-21 with three championships being brought back to the club.
Graham Palmore was the star of the group, having captured two
age group doubles titles. In the over-60 doubles, playing with former
New Jersey resident Dan Ho of Baltimore, Md., Palmore emerged as
champion as he and Ho topped Rich Rose and Tom Doughten, also of 3
Cubed, 21-11, 21-20. Then with Al Green of 3 Cubed, Palmore captured
the 65-over doubles championship by going undefeated in a round-robin
format.
The third 3 Cubed Crown went to Bill Kennedy and Tom Lynch in
the over-70 division, as they defeated the Albany tandem of Larry
Grimmer and Sal Pirri, 21-11, 21-15, in the final. For Kennedy and
Lynch, it marked the fifth Albany Open age group championship they
had won in the 38-year history of the the tournament. They have ben
Albany Open titlists in over-40, over-50, over-60, and over -65 prior
to pacing the over-70 field.
Rose also played over-60 singles and lost in the semifinal to
Chris Diminico of Massachusetts, 21-17, 21-17. In addition, Doughten
was in over-50 doubles with Paul Williams of New York City, and they
were eliminated in the semifinal by New Yorkers Dan Vera and George
Brandeburg, 17-21, 21-16, 11-10.
Scott McNulty of 3 Cubed played over-40 singles, losing in the
semifinal to Jim Lynch of Fishkill, New York, 21-14,, 21-12, and
teaming with Doug Hinshaw of Vermont in over-40 doubles, they lost a
semifinal match to Jim Lynch and Paul Crittendon, 16-21, 21-20, 11-2.
John McNulty and Green played in the over-70 division, losing
in the semifinal to Grimmer and Pirri, 14-21, 21-20, 11-0.
At the Albany Open's annual tournament banquet, Bill Kennedy
was presented with the Robert W. Kendler Award, which is given by the
U.S. Handball Association (USHA) to a person who is active on the
regional level. Kennedy has been secretary-treasurer of the North
Jersey Handball League, Northeast Regional commissioner for the USHA,
and a member of the USHA board of directors. He currently is chairman
of the John Sabo Sr. Memorial New Jersey State Handball Tournament,
held annually at 3 Cubed, and serves as chairman of the John Sabo Sr.
Scholarship Fund and Selection Committee.
