Dear Friends,

In the recently held 2022 assembly elections in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand, the proportion of women voters who turned out to vote (70.42%) was higher than that of the men (68.78%).  In Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur, the women voter turn-out was higher than that of men at 80.96%, 67.2% and 90% respectively.  In Uttarakhand, the difference was striking as only 62.6% males cast their vote.  In some constituencies of Uttar Pradesh as well, women voters exceeded male voters. Despite the realisation of the importance of women as voters, women remain underrepresented as leaders and in decision making globally, and in India, specifically at the State and National level.  Women in India constitute 49% of the total population, but in the national political realm represent a mere 14.36% of the Lok Sabha (78 MPs out of  542) and 11% of the Rajya Sabha (27 MPs of 245).

In order to understand what this trend indicates, why are women voting more and why is there no corresponding increase in women leaders at the state and national level, Women Power Connect is organising a webinar on 6th May 2022 at 5 pm (Friday).  Please register for the webinar at:
