Anne-Marie Mulgrew and Dancers Co. premieres Le Dada va Gaga dans 2011, a multi-media site work created for The Rotunda’s majestic sanctuary space in conjunction with the PIFA Festival and in partnership with The Rotunda. Le Dada celebrates the Rotunda’s 100th Birthday of its building and the company’s 25th Anniversary. It explores every nook and cranny of the glorious cathedral-like space. Inspired by the 20th Century Dadaist movement, Le Dada aims to bring new awareness to the building’s architecture and history through a series of witty vignettes, dances and video/performance installations using the festival theme as a springboard. The performance begins in the courtyard area at the front of the building inviting the audience to roam through the perimeters of the space guided by a Stiltwalker MC leading to a central location for more conventional seating in the round in the 100-year old pews. The work culminates in the black box space with free cake, coffee and conversation.

Bella: The Color of Love draws together the themes of love, art and the struggle of creativity, as seen through the eyes of Bella Chagall, an actress, writer, and lover who lived in the shadow of her famous husband. An accomplished writer, Bella wrote with the same artistry and vivid joy with which her husband painted. Chagall’s paintings and drawings are the parallel to Bella’s two published works. Together they constitute an intricate, poetic dance between two soulmates about the nature of love and creativity. Journeying from Russia to the lights of Paris and to America, Bella: The Color of Love explores the nature of this reciprocal artistic sharing.

As You Like It, you might say it was Shakespeare’s antidote to Hamlet. He wrote the two plays within a year of each other. And as our scholar-in-residence Annalisa Castaldo says, “They share many of the same themes and theatrical devices: the usurping brother; the abandoned daughter; characters in disguise; characters as audience.” But of course, As You Like It is the comedic side of the coin. We see the same themes resolved in an opposite and often hilarious fashion. When we experience both plays in repertory, each shines a unique light on the other, and each is so much richer than it could be alone.

After a Caribbean shipwreck in 1635, the passengers, Africans brought to the new world to be sold into slavery, joined indigenous Caribs and created a culture now recognized by UNESCO as a “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”

In 1997, record producer Ivan Duran and leading Garifuna musician Andy Palacio observed that Garifuna women carried on the teaching of the language and knew and wrote more songs than the menthe men. They determined to seek out and record the best female singers they could find. In Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala, they recorded women of all ages, many of whom had never been recorded before, in homes, seaside shacks, festivals and other settings.

Umalali pays tribute to the rich heritage carried in the voices of Garifuna women. Their powerful voices and call-and-response format draw the listener in to be captivated by the engaging rhythms and wonderful sounds of the Garifuna language.

The inscription in a forgotten cigarette case reveals Jack’s deception to his close London friend Algernon who, while calling out his friend’s impropriety, admits to having his own nom de folie. Chaos ensues as Ernest proposes marriage to Algernon’s cousin Gwendolen, and Algernon pursues Ernest’s ward Cecily. Come revel in the wit of Wilde’s most celebrated play, which is as stingingly comic and relevant today as it was at its premiere in 1895.

McCarthy’s blacklist, the FBI, a big bully Television Network, and a who’s who of comedy legends-to-be. It’s the 1950s in America and the fight to be funny is on. Neil Simon’s classic comedy, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, takes us to the legendary writer’s room for Sid Caesar’s variety comedy program "Your Show of Shows." Laughter on the 23rd Floor is a fabled account of how writers Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Carl Reiner, Larry Gelbart, and others matched wit to wit and punchline to punchline to make comedy history.
