It appears that when I first offered up the archive, I may have missed the second file as our group's data was so big.

Here is the current and updated link:

Please note that the messages are still encoded, but the files and links are all there unencoded.

I did not find the suspension chart on my initial look (what I was trying to find for the other thread) and I fear that it may not be around in the archive due to the format.

Anyways, just thought I would throw that out there and ensure everyone got both sets of downloads.

Let me know if any questions or issues,
Mark

In reply to Joel's message (thank you!) - Also still available here:
Remember, you can visit groups.google.com and search the messages a bit easier than your inbox.

I can also host on a google drive if any issue with dropbox, but you can download for free without account.

Cheers,
Mark

How do you open a .mbox file to read contents?

It appears that you are opening a .zip file in notepad, which is going to appear gabled. Unzip it, and see what it looks like. It should appear in a pretty common email header format which is easily searchable.

Joel may also have a way, or likely, a more elegant way.

Taking the extract, when you go to the messages folder, and unzip messages, it will be a multi part archive.
Use winzip or 7zip on the first mbox file, and extract files.  This will create a 250mb file (I think like Joel was hosting - I did not torrent it).

This mbox file can then be brought into a reader like
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mbox-viewer/

This will produce as expected then:
mboxd.png

There may be a better way, but this works and gets all the information back.

Lmk if any issues,
Mark

If you're using the original .zip or .rar file, the password to unlock the archive is "323gtx".

In my torrent, I have removed the password. No need to keep anything secret in here. It's all for archive and reference purposes, and I don't feel that knowledge about our cool cars is necessarily something to be protected.

Alright. I was able to get this opened in two ways. I use Linux, and was able to open the .mbox file with Evolution, which was super simple. I was also able to open it with Thuderbird, which is a mail client that exists for Windows as well, and I am going to go over how to import an mbox file in a step-by-step process. This is kind of a pain, but replacing an alternator is worse.

  1. Go here, and download the Windows client: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/download/
  2. After installation, you have to create an account in order to import the .mbox file. You can just create a fake account, so follow along to do that:
    1. type a fake name, and fake email address (fadsga...@fdasfasd.com)
    2. select "configure manually" on the left of the "cancel" button beneath the password box
    3. scroll down to the bottom, and select "advance config" above the cancel button
    4. You will see the following message, please click "OK": "This dialog will be closed and an account with the current settings will be created, even if the configuration is incorrect. Do you want to proceed?"
  3. Alright! Now, you should see the fake account on the left. Cool. Now, along the top on the right, select the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines next to the minimize button). Screenshot from 2024-11-17 20-06-03.png
    1. In there, select "add-ons and themes"
    2. Search for "ImportExportTools NG"
    3. click "Add to Thunderbird"
    4. Click "Add" in the dialog window that pops up
    5. It will open a window showing all the features that you just added. Go back to the home screen in the upper-left to your fake account.
  4. In the leftmost window, you will see "Local Folders". Right-click on Local Folders, select importexporttools NG, then import mbox files, and "Individual mbox file"Screenshot from 2024-11-17 20-11-35.png
  5. Select the mbox file, and it will parse out to 79000+ emails that were archived, and display them in date order starting from 12/31/1995
  6. That's it! Woo!
Any questions, let me know.

Legend!

Give the freeware I posted a try.

There is only one step to open the mbox files after you install. :)

If you are able to do that with Mozilla, you will fly through the other application.

The password was mainly to reduce the risk of the zip file shared without permission as there is a lot of PII in the emails.  Didn’t want to unwillingly share people’s personal information that could be scraped for data brokers or worse!

Cheers

This is understandable. However, the Yahoogroup, as well as this mailing list, were and are both searchable as well as public. Meaning that everyone participates in these groups with the full understanding that all communications being made are going to be publicly available. I agree that an individual's privacy should be respected, to my knowledge, this forum has not ever been used to disseminate PII, or any other sensitive personal information. The information in the email archive, as well as this current email server, are and were freely provided to the public, and is still being provided in that same disposition.

On that note, in the time that I have been involved in this forum, I cannot recall a single instance or email that had been sent that made me think "woah, they shouldn't be posting that..." I have read every email that has come through this mailing list since I joined around 2001.

I think we'll be okay :)
