Hello, all! It’s been a while since I’ve been active in here, but I’m in the process of upgrading my 4WD Protege and need some advice. Has anyone eliminated the center diff locking motor on the 4WD trans? Mine doesn’t function anymore because I’ve removed the wiring for it, and I’d like to make the starter easier to access. Is it possible to just unbolt the motor and leave everything as-is? Does leaving the motor off create a problem? I look forward to your advice!

You should be able to remove the diff lock motor and drive the car that way. You might want to put some packing in the exposed hole to keep dirt out.

In addition to making sure the hole is closed to dirt you would need to lock the rod in the unlocked position or it could slide to the locked position on its own. It needs to be kept pushed in. Pulled out is locked.
