Hey all, happy 2026.

Are there any known steering rack swaps that quicken the ratio? Or internal rack/pinion swaps? The service manual says it's OE set up is 2.9 turns, lock to lock. I didn't see any rack/pinion ratio numbers in the FSM. I think I'd be pretty happy with a 2.2 number. How would such a change stress the pump system?

I've seen a "steering quickener" product that seems invasive, cutting/welding, fabrication of levels of commitment. I'm not interested in that concept since it seems to be hard to return to stock, if desired.

Thanks,
Scott

I know that several parts from the 4WD BG chassis swap directly over, but I’m not 100% sure if the rack is one of them. But I can say with 100% certainty that a GTR rack has a quicker ratio and bolts right into a 4WD BG. Piotr Gromek can sometimes get these. I got my GTR rack from him. I hope this helps!

Thanks.

As a side note, I think that we and AI has scraped the web enough now that I'm seeing new old articles about the GTX.

AI said the BG rack swap wouldn't work on a BF, as a direct swap though.

So, maybe I just move from the stock 380mm steering wheel to swap in a 300mm aftermarket wheel.

All the best

I was looking into Summit Racing's steering quickener, as it was recommended on this forum many moons ago.  I have yet to purchase one as other things are priority.
This is just an example:  https://www.summitracing.com/parts/HRE-5225/applications

Yeah Terry, that's about what I saw.

At the risk of assuming or for the benefit of those unfamiliar, that design need to gain access to the steering shaft, cut out a section of the OE shaft, that length is replaced by the quickener.  The 2 black bolts in that Summit picture need a home, a bracket fabbed up to fixture the aluminum body to, to stop it from rotating while the internals are rotating the input and output splined ends.  Just too invasive for my tastes and energy.

That's why I asked about plug n play it near plug n play of the rack itself.  Which itself looks like a chore to R and R, from the Manual instructions anyway.

That installation seems like... a lot.

Is this something that the power steering pump can keep up with, or are you doing this for racing purposes?

It's a lot and I don't want to cross that particular bridge.

Track days, 1 local track in particular has me really busy with arms crossing over and fully changing hand positions.  High work load.

There's a small track, not far from me.  It's an average track at best but it's the closest one, affordable and other friends use it.  I just thought I'd ask if there's any tribal knowledge that reduces lock to lock and not any more invasive than rack removal.
