Frank,
This is Dan Leach.  Has been awhile but I still remember your name as I do so many on this list. They sure bring up many good memories from the past. Hope you are doing well.
Have had a series of family issues to deal with, so really didn't know if I would be available. I am planning on making the Tuesday night function, but have a grandson function on Thursday. Is the Wiley's function for significant others, also? Any special dress for it or just casual?
I stayed in for 21 fantastic years, most at Bragg. The friends I made in the service were truly a great blessing to me.
I'm sure you are besieged with this function, sooooooo, will look forward to seeing you there and your reply.
Dan

Frank, I sent an "all points" call to John's list.  There's a couple of folks who indicated they would show in NOV 09 who haven't yet materialized on your list.  If I get any responses, I'll refer them to you.  All it used to take was a time and place to make s... happen!
I do appreciate your efforts regards the reunion.

Frank,

I was going to complain that I’m merely listed as a ‘capt’ in small letters, but noticed that Stelmasczyk doesn’t even get his first name listed, so I’ll keep my mouth shut and try not to say something stupid – see how I’ve matured?.

Paul, don't feel too bad! Stel (always referred to as Stel because most couldn't spell his name correctly) would be the Mayor of FT. Bragg if it was ever incorporated and had its own civilian elected leadership. Know of few officers who homesteaded as long there as he did.

Stel, I am so doggone disappointed that my work is keeping me in Benin until the 29th, otherwise I'd be there to take your money on the golf course. My game ain't what I was a few years ago, but I still keep the hdcp in single digits so maybe the next time we come up to see the mother-in-law we can get together.

Will be missing out on this opportunity to see so many of you, especially COL Rauch, who had to put up with such a bunch of knucklehead LTs, the likes of which the eighty deuce has probably not seen again. Between all the combat sports of the Gunfighter, rugby and our Saturday morning football games, not too mention a few reckless bachelor/promotion parties and prop blasts, its a wonder we all survived being "sick, lame and lazy! Airborne crazy!"

Hope to see you all at the next one! j'espere!

Cowboy

I was just trying to stir the pot a little in anticipation of all the lies I anticipate being foisted on this group during the happy hour.

Sorry you can’t make it.  We’ll make up something about you in your absence. . . Gunfighter, forgot about him. What a guy.

Gunfighter was General Emmerson (sp?). He had been in Korea and came to command the 82nd, then XVIII abn corps, I think. He had a propensity to put his foot in his mouth in public. He instituted PT games like “combat football.” No rules, people got injured all the time.

Hey Jake:  Guess you were on sick call or on a "stolen sheets" mission with SFC Panzullo on the day the Gunfighter had the mass officer formation in the bowled football stadium.  It was my first day in the Division and I asked another officer after we had been standing/waiting at parade rest for 30 minutes who was the Gunfighter.  The guy just said--"Just wait and see.  You won't believe it!"  Next thing I knew a helicopter landed amid a sound show of military inspired music blaring from large speakers at the top of the stadium and a guy jumped out wearing fancy (pearl handled?) 45's with a Wild West type gun belt and yelling into a microphone that "Pro Life is the Go Life."  And it went downhill from there.

It ended 15 months later at 0300 on Chicken Road when you and I decided to change careers.  You were the one who told me how to use the GI Bill to go to law school.  Remember?  I still feel guilty about leaving and letting COL Rauch down--he was a fine officer and a great commander.  I just wish all the commanders I ran into were like he was.  I've always believed that if all the officers O5 and above were like COL Rauch, the Army wouldn't have had such difficulties in the 70's.

I don't think I can make the reunion because my wife has to work but I'll be thinking of all you guys.  And remember that I was the one who came up with the idea for stealing COL Vuono's hub caps which we awarded him at his Hail & Farewell.

Now wait a minute, Larry, this is The Quad as The Quad Bod Guard (Ron "Stella" Stelmaszyk) says or as The Voice (Burt Vanderclute) says, Danny Q.  Anyway, it's me and we have to delve into the Archives on this one. I remember The Axman (Tom Palmer) and I stealing one hubcap and having it engraved when Col Vuono left DivArty. I thought Axman was going to die. Guess he wasn't used to taking hubcaps off his Commander's car. BUTTTTTT, I thought it was The DJ (Rick Brown) who came up with the first theft idea and actual theft of his hubcaps for the Fifties Party. I just want to know who we should send to jail.
Some trivia for all, Col Basha, rest his soul, got me into the 8th ID DivArty and at a get together of 82nd officers in honor of Gen Vuono, Gen Vuono told me he had never worked with a better bunch of officers than the ones we had there. Furthermore, he took the engraved hubcap and put it on his wall, never putting it back on his car.
We had an unbelievably multi-talented group there and it was so much fun going to work. You never knew what was going to happen, like riding motorcycles through the O Club on the brand new carpet after I promised O' Club manager everything would be OK, tread marks, fumes and all.
Great people and great memories.
Even The Gunfighter, he was a real Vietnam hero with a lot of tactical ability.

Saturday football and the bachelor parties…OMG!  In today’s Army they would have court-martialed the lot of us.

I still remember coming upon a French officer during a sand storm in Iraq, but when he removed his head gear it turned out to be “Cowboy Cobb” doing his best interpretation of one.  I should have known it wasn’t a French officer.  The uniform shouldn’t have fooled me.  He wasn’t trying to surrender to me.  ;))

(Just kidding.  They were pretty damn good soldiers.)

Speaking of Saturday football,  Who was it that broke my nose but good at one of those games?  As I recall I was rushing the QB with arms raised and he released the ball and his throwing arm went between my raised arms and gave me a karate chop across the bridge of my nose.  I spent the next 6 hours in the Womack emergency room waiting for them to track down a nose DR.  Come on now, fess up.  Also, Whose Bachelor party was it, hosted by Cowboy Cobb at his place on East Hampton Road, that Squeaky Graves stole the stripper’s underwear and she called the cops.  Last thing I remember was Mark Brigham and I doing the low crawl back to my house three doors down to avoid the confrontation.  Ah yes I remember it well.

Mike Graves lives in California last time I spoke with him - 4 or 5 years ago.  He retired from the Army as a LTC.  His wife's name is Rita.  She was an Army nurse.  Mike is a year younger than me so he's roughly 55.  He was the Dean of Students or something like that for a small college.  Besides being in the 82d together Mike and I also were in 6-14FA in Pinder Barracks, Zirndorf, FRG (1st Armored Division) ~1981-82.  Mike was a superb firing battery commander.  Rita made him act right except when I could catch him in a weak moment and dare him to do something.  He could never resist a dare.

I am sorry Marilyn and I cannot make the reunion.  Our oldest, Shannon, is visiting at the same time here in the Columbus, GA, area.  Since she lives in Mesa, AZ, we do not see her often.

Mike "Squeaky" Graves graduated from Norwich in either 76 or 77 as I recall. Lost track of him when I left the Division in 79 to be exiled to Pershing.

Flip, I don't recall who is was that broke your nose, but as I recall they did a good job. We seemed to have several decent parties at my house so I am not sure which Batcherlor Party it was. Could have been mine or Rudderman's. As I recall he took her night gown, to which she then took my roommates portable TV, who then pulled a gun on her and I'm not sure about the cops being called but there were quit a few folks who low crawled away from our parties. That was SOP in those days. Then there was the one we had at the apartment complex and Rat Anderson got the stripper and she was too drunk to drive her moped home..............

Stel, I think maybe it was you that broke Flip's nose?

I don’t remember him from 6-14.  You guys were in “The Featherheads” (Jon Schreyach hated my special nickname for his battalion) when Don Thorpe was Bn XO and I was XO in 2-78.  You then went on to command the TAB where I took you under my wing and turned you into the success you became.  ; )  Do you remember reporting in to me at Bragg when I was in G1?  I remember it, just as I remember you as F-TAB BC.

Despite my mother-in-law living in Fayetteville and having visited her (probably) 100 times since 1975 when I exited the service at Ft. Bragg, I don't think I had EVER gone back "on base" since then.  Well, last week on my most recent visit, I decided to drop by the old digs of the 1/320th to check it out.

Wow!  For those not back there in awhile, you are in for seeing big changes.  The road network is very different, and I had trouble finding "home".  Seeking landmarks to guide me and a fuzzy memory, I entered Bragg via the checkpoint on the All American Parkway, which was still in the planning stages in 1975.  I found Huber Road and the gas station (where we waited in long lines in 1974) at the corner of Reilly Road (now one way only).  Going west (?), I looked for the old 3 story concrete barracks/headquarters which obviously were no longer there.  In fact, I found the geography only because the motor pools are still where they always were.  Anyway, instead of the old buildings, there is a new "city" being built, with clusters of 8-10 story brick "barracks" and complexes of other amenities.  I think the only building still standing from the 70's was the old York theater.
82nd Div HQ is located in a completed different spot and of course, has a separate ring of security around it.  Never found Div Arty HQ

The biggest surprise for me was that the place was nearly empty!  I guess most or all of the the troops are deployed.

I also managed a Cadillac drive by recon of Cambridge Arms, 3 Colonies, Briarwood and other assorted off-site party and crash scenes of the past.  Not much different at any of them.

Sorry I can't make the reunion next week.  Drink a beer and make a putt for me!

You never found DIVARTY HQ because it no longer exists.  We no longer have DIV Artillery.  All the old DS Arty BNs now are organic to the IN BDEs (or Brigade Combat Teams).

Just wait until you get the briefings.  Troubling in many ways.  But lets get some beer in us before we argue the merits of “Transformation.”  J
