Thinking way back to when we read this, I'll try to answer these
questions decently.
First of all, I would say that Tana French was convincing as the voice
of a male detective. I say this because while I was reading I never
felt like what he was saying as a male was off, and I never even
thought about the voice of the detective being written by a female.
She was successful in that aspect of the writing.
I suppose she "bends the formula" of a detective story successfully.
She did have me guessing throughout parts of the novel. She didn't
follow the formula of here's the mystery, work the whole novel to
solve mystery, mystery solved. She did it in such a way that she
presented two mysteries, discussed one, worked on solving the other
with the first somewhat involved, and by the end she only gave a
resolution for one. Which, by the way, kind of drove me crazy.
I don't feel like the end was satisfactory. I was much more
interested in the disappearance of the detective's two childhood
friends than the case he was actually working on. French seemed to
focus on that mystery more than the other and made me feel more
invested in finding out the truth about his friends. I was
disappointed that I never found out what happened to them. However, I
did like how the murder of the little girl was all the evil joy of her
sister.
I'm sure since French is an actress it did influence her writing...
(Can't think much on this subject at the moment.)
I don't know if I would necessarily recommend this to someone not keen
on murder mysteries. I found that I really didn't get that into it
until I was nearly finished (much more interested in it than the Raw
Shark Texts though). I myself haven't read too many murder mysteries
(used to read a lot of Box Car Children mysteries though and loved
them :) ). I did listen to a murder mystery on tape and would
definitely say In the Woods was a lot less corny, which can only be a
plus to someone not keen on the genre.
Well, there you go. Sorry some of it may sound like rambling, and I
didn't read it over and wrote most of it while on the phone. So...try
to enjoy. ;)
