Congratulations to the winners:
http://www.300house.com/blog/2011/06/300-house-open-design-challenge-winners.html

Unfortunately we could only recognize a few winners. There were
plenty of other good designs and ideas. Let us continue the discussion
here, on this forum. We'll continue to encourage all efforts that aim
to build a $300 house, both here and elsewhere!

The prototyping workshop will be announced here as well, so stay
tuned.

Morning Christian,

Congratulations on the contest outcomes and also to the winners for their
great initiatives and creative ideas.

I am currently in the Philippines -- in an area near Peurto Galera (5
hours road and boat trip from Manila the capitol of the Philippines)
staying at Coco Beach.

I have been looking, for a while, to find a "self-help" project to
support. I have followed with interest your contest and maybe there is an
opportunity here.

I have recently visited a group of people here known as the Mangyan
people. They are the original inhabitants of this area but struggle in
today's world.

I would like to throw into the ring for your consideration the following
-- there is a village here of 60 Mangyan families -- that is around 420
adults and children -- desperately need a housing-work-and-life "package".
Maybe as part of the contest's future activities you would like to
consider "using" the Mangyan's needs as a real expression of the contests
outcomes.

Let me stress the Mangyan's need a package -- house , jobs and life -- I
believe this strongly -- and i am currently discussing such possibilities,
including a fishing boat and training in construction etc. To raise the
support needed. A number of key elements need yet to be assured by the
local people and authorities. But first things first.

At $300 a house i will undertake to find $18,000 to build 60 houses
(chosen from the finalists -- selecting the most suitable design for the
local conditions and Mangyan people's needs -- if the designer(s) will
contribute their expertise in developing a "production" model from the
design submitted and of course use of their design materials/rights.

I am happy to discuss this further -- I will return to Sydney Australia by
24th June. I am in transit after today.

Regards.

Ian Fraser

Hi Ian,

That sounds very interesting. I am curious as to what their
traditional building practices(materials) are, and also how there
villages are traditionally arranged.

Sorry so slow to reply -- been traveling a lot.

Well , I was just visiting with some of the people and their houses really
shocked me to be honest -- so poorly made and so inadequate to any
reasonable living standard.

Traditionally there is available all the coconut tree type tropical timbers
right thru to mahogany and teak even! As well as the related materials of a
lush and rich environment including some coastal volcanic elements. Mud is
very plentiful!

But the problem is -- surprise, surprise -- money; the materials are usually
always owned by somebody. The dilemma is that often labor is the only cheap
thing.

Any questions ?

You are of course joking, if you are serious about this discussion
than let us set one thing straight, there is no $300 house possible.
To continue in the same spirit as the JOVOTO Challenge will not get
you closer to solving the housing problem. Let us set reasonable
standards first and talk about the price after.

Good morning to you -- nice if you added some background, qualification
even, to your email.

I promise -- I am not joking.

You are entitled to your safe, all knowing, centre of your own universe
opinion -- standards, what f#@&%*!? standards - I just came from a place
where there is a $5 house , if $5 is all you have.

There is one , maybe two designs I can see from the contest that I could
possibly use in my project. They put me way ahead of where I was at before
the contest in terms of having a design that is low cost and max house for
the budget. If there is no answer here , then India looks to be a serious
source of such design. I would like to see you tell the Tata Company "you
are of course joking".

I am hoping most $300 house entrants were not "joking" with this contest. I
hope the designs will be re-worked, improved, tested and further developed
in the prototyping activity and prove genuine and useful.

Cheers

Ian, I congratulate you on your endeavor and wish you well.

I do have a couple of questions for you.

What do the Mangyan believe a house looks like?  What does a house mean in their culture?

The Philippines get multiple typhoons every year. The minimalist house that can be easily replaced after a storm might reflect cultural wisdom.  Without the knowledge and materials to build a house capable of surviving such storms investing in a home is a waste of energy and resources.  A permanent house might introduce too many problems at once for their culture to absorb and survive.  Who are we to assume that their culture is inferior to our own?

Ownership wouldn't be an issue in temporary housing where it is a major problem in permanent housing for instance.  It would be interesting to see if their culture has mechanisms to accommodate private ownership of space and things.  A permanent house owned by a family might create real problems if their culture has never considered it an option.

Unintended consequences are real.  We need to use real caution in introducing a solution because we might be creating problems that can destroy a culture.  Think of Smallpox and what it has done to the indigenous peoples of the world.

Harvey,
not to underestimate the complexity and importance of a home over tertiary products
BUT, There was no team of Japanese engineers at my door when i was thinking of buying my truck , nor were there clipboards and surveys before my purchase of my phone, camera, or quite honestly dinner out with a bunch of friends.
What all these purchases have in common was a capitol expenditure greater  then the home that a bunch of people are trying to design and build.
Imperfectly, but build nonetheless

Yes, there is no ONE solution
As there is no One diet, religion or body type.
Yet we can try...

Do the Mangyan believe that this is what a house should look like?
At the risk of sounding the cultural mercenary
If they can't/won't believe  that this is what a house could /would/ should be.
Then they are under no obligation to purchase one.
Am i imposing my beliefs of what a house is?
Sure
Am i coercing the  indigenous out of their homes, and dragooning them into a  domicile?

BWaaahaaaahaaa, all is going according to plan

Seriously dude,
scarf down some chill pills
Lets get it past the drawing board before we start screaming about colonial oppression?
Equating designing and building an affordable shelter system, one that provides a sense of security and well being to Smallpox?

Take a breath, its all good

peace
 Pete

Hi Pete, my first response was a sincere WTF?

Then I looked at your entry and understood.

That aside, look at Ian's targeted group. It's a poor village of
indigenous peoples in the Philippines. Indigenous peoples define
successful social and architectural schemes. We should introduce
ideas that might sabotage their culture with the utmost caution.

Look at my idea for instance. It's not designed for situations like
the Mangyan. It's designed for places where there us a desperate need
of an economical building material. Plastic trash can be that
product. Instead of using rock, concrete, trash wood, etc and so on
we offer a building blocks made of plastic trash. Those blocks are
made without using heat or additional chemicals.

But once again, I wouldn't recommend my idea for Ian's situation.

Since you are in with a bunch of students that like connecting pipe
you might find going to the US Patent Office and doing a search using
my name interesting. I was awarded two patents last year for pipe to
channel connectors. They make making metal barns, shops, garages,
etc. really easy using standard pipe and C purlins/channels.
