Hi,

Donald King is refurbishing some yachts and is looking for any surplus carbon masts that are spare. 

So if you have upgraded to a new mast, he is looking for an older one.

Hi Everyone,

Just adding up my costs as Paul was asking about this as well.  I also purchased a boom section which I am yet to use.  Going this way was a bit of an experiment so if anyone wants to go the same route it's not my fault if it goes bang.  This is what you pay the professionals for.  I had never built a mast before, so there are some things which would be better if I did it again, but pretty happy with the outcome.

Top section has less taper than I wanted due to the mandrels available.  Could probably do with increasing wall thickness on bottom section and reducing on top.

Kilwell:

Mast top section $355.24

Mast bottom section $638.38

Joining Spigot $62.37

Shipping $35.00

Total + GST = $1,254.64

Oborn's Nautical:

Backing plates for T Hooks

Delrin plug for bottom of Mast

Delrin step for boat (matches plug)

$148.50 inc GST

Topfab:

2 pieces PVC Sail Track

$97.29 inc GST

Sail track was glued on using expensive structural adhesive.  Have since found out from Hamish that Sikaflex is fine for this.

So that's $1,500.43 - plus your usual cost for stays, whatever you want to do with halyard, and your own hourly rate!  I probably spent a bit more time than needed as I was messing around with a custom halyard lock and gooseneck fitting.

Gavin has put together a high modulus mast using sections from Kilwell. His performance has definitely gone up hugely since then. Gavin—how much did it cost? And what would be the reduction for putting together a standard modulus mast using Kilwell sections.

And then there's the Carbotec mast that Mike Langley has. They are cheaper than C-Tech masts. Mike's is probably too bendy but Adrian knows that.

How many boats did you get? Is there a result sheet? Last two weekends we have had 8 & 7 boats racing so best it's been here for a long time. Lincoln has new C-Tech HM stiff mast with a carbon track and he seems to have gone up a notch too.

best fun I have had in a long time. We went to 10 races on the first day. It was a delayed start and super light to begin, but good starting practice. Then breeze came in late Saturday so the club offered to run extra races in case it was too light on Sunday. Conditions were epic for final 4 races on Saturday.

Then on Sunday it was light again, but not too bad and we did a further four races; total 14.

As of yesterday, it was the first day where I could walk down stairs and generally move around again. 

The class a really good vibe and we had fun watching end of the AC.

Donald asked Willetts for a price on an SM mast, and Willetts said it wouldn't save any money. Honestly I can't think of how anyone could do more damage to our class, unless all the sailmakers get together to charge $10k per sail. I might chat to the Pauls about how we can make a cost effective mast that performs better to help ensure a future for their new yachts. thoughts?
