North Island Sprints Championship Regatta 2023 Cancelled

Last year it was Covid . . . now its clams.

As a previous entrant in the Rotorua Yacht Club Spring Sprints Regatta, we wanted to let you know that this year’s event on 14-15 October 2023 has been cancelled due to the biosecurity threat of freshwater gold clams and the increased risk of contamination this event poses.

The committee will refocus its efforts on hosting the next Sprints Regatta at Lake Rotorua in October 2024.

We’re aware that some of you have already made travel and accommodation arrangements and we hope that this early decision will enable you to get refunds.  If you have already registered and paid, please email rotoruay...@gmail.com with your bank account details and we will organise a refund within the next 14 days.

Freshwater Gold Clam

Freshwater gold clams are an exotic aquatic pest and were first found in the Waikato River near Lake Karāpiro in early May 2023. They reproduce rapidly, threaten native species and clog water-based infrastructure.  Freshwater gold clams are able to produce 400 juveniles a day and up to 70,000 juveniles a year.  The adult clams are 2cm to 3cm in length and are typically dirty white, yellow, or tan. They have an obvious ribbed texture on the shell.

The freshwater gold clams have not been found in Rotorua lakes yet and we need to keep it that way. Once introduced they are difficult to control, and eradication has never been achieved.  The freshwater gold clam has now been given the legal status of an Unwanted Organism under the Biosecurity Act. This means that people must not knowingly move or spread the freshwater gold clam or water that may contain it. To do so would be an offence under the Biosecurity Act 1993.

Biosecurity New Zealand is trying to determine how far the clams have spread and explore potential future actions.  If you think you've seen the freshwater gold clam:

  • note the location
  • take a photo if possible.

You can then either:

  • freephone Biosecurity New Zealand on 0800 80 99 66, or
  • complete the online reporting form at report.mpi.govt.nz
